Just flipping through the channels i noticed Daily Planet, I said to myself oh cool they are showing a man who quit his job to make cannons (pneumatic and combustion) for a living. Apparently he has 5 books and working on his 6. I dont have a link yet because the Daily Planet website hasnt updated its videos. The reason why im posting this topic is because his neighbor down the street is an engineer, he created an aluminum cannon, 1" sprinkler valve, and a scuba tank as an air supply. He was going for the record for launching a t-shirt, he apparently charged up the cannon (the highest he ever has before) and launched the t-shirt 170 meters. I feel that this can easily be beaten by anyone in this community with the will to make a piston valve. This guy used a 1" sprinkler valve with excess chamber volume at who knows what pressure. I feel that a 2" port piston valve or a 2" sprinkler valve can easily beat this distance. Please comment if you watched this episode and/or feel that this distance can be beaten, or if you have video proof of yourself beating 170 meters.

I also feel this could easily be broken. The easiest way I see to do this, would be to take an existing hybrid, temporarily replace the barrel with one to fire a t-shirt in a foam sabot, load the t-shirt in the sabot, and fire it.



From what you say, it sounds like he's using nothing more than an upscaled CA1. :lol:

i give it a shot with my hybrid when i get it done.

i would be so optimistic to say that if he did it with his sprinkler gun i can do it with a 21foot 11x hybrid.

Personally I don't see how he launched a t-shirt 170m with a 1" sprinkler valve and staying under 150psi. He must've had a long ass barrel.

For reference my 2" piston valve sent a mini nerf 170m from a 3' barrel at 85psi. A t-shirt is another story. I take it was one of those t-shirts in a sealed bag.

Probly vacum sealed tight enough to turn it into a spear.

He says that the cannon uses a very high pressure. What I was wondering is how high can you pressurize a sprinkler valve...it says in the manual not to exceed 80 PSI.

If it's tightly packed, I can beat that, with one hand tied behind my back.

I've shot a spud over half a kilometer easy.
That is...I could see it's trajectory and the 500 meter sign ( at european pumkin chunkin contest, they let me)
At only 12 bar ( above it becomes to fast to see anything) at about a 45 degree angle.

My cannon had a short barrel back then.
Now I have double the lenght and it can take 30-35 bar.


To make a long story short...That record can be broken..And not just by me!

The guy is a fraud. Pure and simple. Most Spudfiles users could probably beat that record with a cannon that wouldn't take three hours to build. No, he's not lying about using high-pressure. What he DOESN'T say, is that he used high pressure.... for a sprinkler valve. A sprinkler valve, if you don't care if it blows up, can be run reliably at around 120 psi. But by then you've wired up the solenoid as high as you can go without frying it. Normal high pressure IS around 80. Hell, if I could tie a t-shirt into a ball and stuff it into a foam sabot, I could probably get close to, if not EQUAL his distance with my CA1 at around 90 psi. If you want to do it easily just get any average spudfiles user, and tell him to build a big-a$$ t-shirt howitzer. He'll show up the next day with a 4" gun with dual tanks and about 50 t-shirts packed in foam. Prepare to break more than one record.

Many sites or videos showing off a spudgun brag about the power. They tend to exaggerate the distance with more then 50%.

Only here at spudfiles people dont do that. Purely caused by the fact that many members here will KNOW you could never have made such a distance.

yeah that's true, acctually it's even worse - if anything flies further than 100 m and/or faster than 40m/s people get the impression that it's at least 300 - 500m

now imagine that the estimated max range if your gun is over one mile.... how are you going to verify it ? :D

BTW I've found out that fields which has been just plowed work great for estimating max range of your gun... you get a small cloud of dust as a projectile impacts the gound - well it's good up to 200 - 300 m max depending on the energy of projectile on landing but at least you see where it landed

The T-shirt would have to be packed damned tight to make it that far. Remember the discussion about hitting 1 mile ranges with a tennis ball? It came out to about Mach 143 in the atmosphere. Needless to say, the ball would immolate at that kind of speed. Even a golfball would self immolate before it hit the kind of speed necessary to go a mile in this atmosphere.

Now imagine a T-shirt. Low density, large surface area, low mass. It isn't going to go very far no matter what you shoot it out of, unless you eliminate the gases around it.

what if you had a hard surface in front of it to cause that thing called super cavitation? doubt that do anything, plus aton more air resistance. :wink:

I dont think making a canon that could do this, its a matter of making a T-shirt =p

Here's an idea: Get a 2-inch or 3-inch barrel. Make a section of pipe about 2 feet long. This is the case for the round. Take a t-shirt, and place a golf ball in the middle. Place that in the case, with the middle being farthest forward, so it's as if the ball hit the t-shirt in the middle and kept going. Load the case into a cannon, and fire it. That ought to get it a bit farther.
