Awesome Video Editing

Hey all, it's been a while since I've posted anything so I thought I might pop in and say hello. This is just a video showing the extent of my knowledge in video editing without cgi software. The video show me shooting my brother with a potato gun. And before you get your knickers tied up in a bunch about me using my cannon as a weapon, consider that the entire thing is setup and not real. The angle of the video, editing and acting are all designed to fool the viewer into thinking the shot was real. See if you guys can tell how I did it.

I think in this case it would be more important what the video portrayed, rather then what really happened. Who cares though, and you did explain it in your post.

Everything looked good, but your brother hoped up a little fast at the end and that just looked weird. Plus you got some impossible camera angles (not sure if you were concerned with that) and how did you did to whole potato hitting the helmet bit? Looks good.

Effective, but your brother started to fall before he was actually hit in that third shot.
I assume that you dry fired the launcher in the first wide shot then did , because it doesn't look like you cut two individual shots together.

I once photoshopped a picture of me shooting myself with HEAL - I'm not sure I still have it though. Maybe if I get bored I'll try something else like that again sometime.

Looks like 5 different takes from different angles edited together to make the viewer think that shot 2 and 3 were slo-mo replays of the first take.

First take looks like a dry shot. If not it was too fast for the camera to pick up and was off angle from the supposed target.

Second take looks like a real potato shot, shooter and assistant in roughly same position as first take.

Third take looks like potato salad  was hand thrown from relatively close range at the "victim"s helmet..victim falling exactly like he did in the first take.

Fourth take is the paniced run up to the victim.

Fifth take is the victim rising.

You did a pretty fair job with continuity in the takes. However, your wide camera shot in the first take gives away there's no camera men shooting the relative close ups depicted in the second and third clips.

A reasonable effort however. Are you considering a film career?

Awesome editing...Too good. I can see anti-spudgun kooks using this one!
"and here's a boy shooting his brother in the head"

BTW, I was wondering what happened to you.
and,Did you see Starman's finished noise cannons? Sound was great too. 8)

EDIT: the helmet shot still looked realistic, because spuds tend to fragment a little from firing anyway IMO.

Easy to do with Final cut... Looks great. Though if I were you I would have not told people it was fake and totally punked em all.

I might have spotted something weird if I hadn't been told - it's good, but it doesn't sit perfectly.

If it was the first shot followed by the last shot of running up to the guy on the ground. I would've thought it was some what real but a little suspicious. The middle shots killed it IMO.

just watching it through once, it's unlikely anyone (other than a spudder) would notice they were fake, but i liked it, the only other thing i noticed- in the first shot, the guy in the white shirt gave a thumbs up, not so in the second...

ps. i don't think the first shot was fake, cause i swear i can see the potato leave the barrel and hit the target in the torso

Heh, I like the bullet time (spud time)?

I'm pretty sure you just chucked some potato bits at your buddy there, or fired it at a low pressure. I doubt the camera would have caught it so well had it been real. Hell, you could have just fired it at a board and edited your friend in there instead, but that's getting a lil complicated.

Either way, nice job. Had you not said it was fake, I probably would have never guessed.
