x2 on ice slugs, by far the cheapest ammo you don't have to worry about after shooting.

I have to agree with the dense metal powder suspended in a biodegradeable material idea, however, it might be a bit of a trick to get it to stay together, as a metal has a high surface area and can thus absorb heat very quickly - something like wax or hot glue might not be able to penetrate and seal it together. Some sort of resin or binary casting compound might work a bit better, although I've never actually tried it and therefore can't speak from experience.

Well, depending on how much Mc Donalds they've had recently... a sabot might not be necessary

I would suggest rocks. Easy to find, and perfectly friendly to the environment! (At least, the parts it doesn't hit!) Ice is also good, but it can be kind of difficult to get a good fit with it before you lose performance due to melting.

Why not just standard full-metal-jacket copper/lead or just lead ball shot...standard steel/copper BBs... Both copper and lead are naturally occurring elements and can be found just about everywhere in and on the earth.

No, I don't wanna hear any BS about lead poisoning the precious environment...

Copper and lead do not naturally appear in the world as solid lumps of their element. At least one other element has to be knocked off to get the pure metal from an ore.

My contribution is papier-mâché using a biodegradable glue, starch based perhaps. It's been used before for sabots in actual powder guns. Presumably they were less concerned about biodegradability than the fact it was one of the most suitable mouldable substances in ye-olde days before plastics invaded.

No need to get all fluffed up there Hotwired. The idea was to toss a barb at the whole concept of "biodegradable", nay shall I say it, "earth friendly" ammo. That is the undercurrent of the idea isn't it?

But when using it in a PVC gun, the PVC gets frozen and brittle.

I will soon be taking delivery of biodegradeable plugs in 37 and 40mm. Even having them dyed OD. Used for paintball sabots. Made of starch they biodegrade and are eaten by microbes. Eventually we will be making other styles, possibly shells of the material.
