Over the past several weeks, i have built several silencers before coming to the one i have now, made of 1 1/2 abs with wooden plugs at both ends and torn paper towels as the filler. it reduces the noise from a crack and whoosh to more of a hiss and whistle

i had previously used pop bottles and paper, with varying results

I was wondering who else has made a note-worthy silencer,

What did you make it out of?
How effective is it?
How hard was it to build?
Does it look badass?

Very interested to hear what you have to say!

Here are some pictures of the silencer on just the barrel, it is a 3/4 inch pvc barrel for marbles.

I have made some silencers in my day for 1/2"-1" barrels.

I have come up with a few methods/designs of my own for maximum reduction in sound. I will draw some labeled pictures for you in paint in a moment so i can illustrate my designs.

silencers are cool when you need to be quiet (crazy nabours) but other than that they are useless to me

i dont know dude i would say your attempt is how you say epic fail? the way you made your fill is obscure and you should use what they call baffle stacks. now me my self i have a few silencers (store bought and 2 that i made) basicaly its a conical piece turned down on a lathe and bored out

alright, here we go.

this is my advanced model. the other 2 are basic designs that anyone could think up, so i didn't bother making plans for them.

But this one, i designed and has worked better then anything i have ever used/made.

Image

barrel = 1/2"
coupling = (drilled out) 1/2"-2"
purple = where needs cement
the wing looking things on the barrel are actually sections of a 24 ounce soda bottle (to bottom 2 inches to be exact) with a 1/2" hole drilled in the center of them.

How it's set up:
holes in the barrel, 1/8" in the areas shown. 2-4 holes are drilled in the angled side of the coupling on the left, 1/2". 4-6 bottle bottoms are used and spread out, gradually getting closer as you go away from the muzzle. They have to be facing in the direction i have shown, otherwise you might actually intensify the decibels the gun produces.

No Filler Needed!

Any questions or comments , ask and i would be more then happy to explain.

hope this helps,

I wouldnt say epic fail, it does work. this is only one of thousands of silencer designs. i chose this one because of the simplicity of design. but i can assure you, that the sound is SIGNIFICANTLY decreased. i have added a simple diagram of the interior

The fill is actually very effective, i ripped about 3 sheets into about 1 inch squares, and then loosely packed it in, this is all thats needed to absorb the gasses from the shot. the tighter you pack it, the less effective for these relatively low power guns.

your design looks good but i would suggest using foam instead of "paper towels".

preferably the free samples of foam you get when you order a free video from the sleep number bed company.

They are high grade and free. And they come in about 5" x 2.5" x 2" blocks.

That is too thick, i used pillow stuffer, but it was not effective enough. the paper towels are used because there is an extreme amount of air, but just enough to stop noise from reverbrating and keep it silent. it may not be the best, but dam does it work. How well does the bottle approach work? what noise is produced?

Like i said, it is better then anything i have ever tried before (including store bought). and i take it you mean "REduced"? I don't have a decibel reader yet but it is a very noticeable amount. One that i doubt your design could reach...

and the foam isn't too thick if you don't over pack. just put enough in so when you shake it, that none move, but not so packed that you couldn't reduce its volume by 1/2 if you pressed down on it. Make sence?

i would say it produces 15-20% the "bang" that the gun would have without the silencer.

and im guessing your silencer produces probably 55-60%?

Trust me, i put a lot of thought into this design, studying and modifying store-bought models

well, im going to bed, gotta early morning tomorrow. night guys :wink:
