I've Been Thinking...Barrel Insert's

Sabots. Instead of using a sabot why not a barrel insert with a twist lock at the muzzle to hold it in. Could turn a general barrel into a multi caliber cannon. Sand them down just enough to make them easy to install and remove and have the breech end pinned to hold the ammo.
I'll draw up something with the paint program in a little while and put it up. As all ways your thoughts and idea's are welcomed.

if you are talking about an outer sleeve with the barrel bore inside.. the the problem is if you build it to fit a 2" bore... what happens when you want to put in a 1.5" bore and the insert is smaller than the outer sleeve diameter?

No, the insert goes completely inside except at the muzzle where the lock is.

Click the link in my Sig, and look at the pics of DD1... and read the descriptions... I have 1" and 1.25" inserts for dd.... the end of the gb barrel has a female thread fitting, and the inserts have male thread fittings that screw into it...

Part of the idea behind a sabot is to increase the area of the projectile on which the pressure acts, creating a greater force thus moar acceleration thus moar power
But this idea would work for those willing to give up this huge advantage.

depending on the barrel length, terminal velocities can be achieved without the sabot effect... on long guns performance doesn't change once terminal velocity is achieved

Your way a head of me. How long have you had this set up?

Since early summer...
I'm making a .25" insert for the copper cane now... One nice thing about this method is that you can make really long smaller bore inserts because so much of the barrel is supported by the main barrel...

It's good thinking. I won't be doing the paint example, this idea has been done.

I made a golf ball barrel insert for the venom. it is a tube that is too small to fit snug in the barrel, so I sleeved it in 3 places with UHMW adhesive backed sheet and now it fits perfect. I still need to finish honing the inside though, but thats beside the point. It will be held in place at the front of the barrel by a hose clamps and rubber sleeve sinc the barrel insert stick out enough for a hose clamp to grab onto it.
