If you want to be more certain about it expanding on impact you could slot the hollow point walls to create petals.

There are a few actual hollowpoint bullets that do this. Like the Black Talon

I will do that on future designs if this one doesn't perform.

Hmm, when I look at those bullets it gave me the idea of casting the slug inside a copper pipe to make it look good and it would certainly be easier to work with then steel with my limited tools.

You might want to consider a soft tip of some description, that will aid expansion and also reduce velocity loss due to aerodynamic drag:

Thanks, I could probably use wax. Would have to fill the hole completely to make it stick good enough though.

That would move the center of gravity futher forward to.

Edit: how would cast aluminum behave in a hollowpoint? Could be used instead of copper like in the regular bullet. It should give me a big increase in muzzle velocity and make the bullet expand easier.

The problem is that aluminium is not as soft as lead, and this might not be offset by the increase in velocity, so the nose ideally would be appropriately slotted (as per the examples hotwired indicated) in order to aid expansion.
