what pressures will glass withstand

i have a glass blower for a friend and i wanted to know at what thickness will glass withstand the force of the average explosion also he can thread the glass for me wth a awsome tool any way heas going to make my chammber and barell all one peace and thread me an end cap also can any one recomend a good barrell to combustion chamber ratio thank you all for your time to read this post on a side note heas going to heat the glass and thread the bolts in coolist thing ive ever seen he showed me how he was going to do it thanks agin

So basically you want to make a glass cannon, just those words alone scares me. I suggest you make it pretty thick, the threads will probably shatter also. You should be very careful with a glass chamber, if a light coat of gasoline on the inside will blow up the bottle, I think hairspray might as well. There really isn't a way to know without testing. Be careful.

I wouldnt really trust a glass cannon. If its really thick I guess you can get away with it, but I wouldnt personally try it. Also the more movable and removable parts on it, the more likely something is gonna go wrong. You should consider that in the design. It will look an amazing cannon when finished just be carefull.

The glass (beer)bottles are made for presure not less then the coke bottles>the prsure rating is much more then what a combustion can make.I don't see big diferesne between pvc shrapnels and glass shrapnels.I had no problems with SQUARE shape glass botle.

I would just feel worried about having glass flying everywhere, as glass can be razor sharp. Also you couldnt use it cold temperatures, glass is very brittle in the cold. You should try it and tell us how it goes.

Glass is not used any very many pressure applications for a very good reason. It is an extremely brittle materiel. Even if a glass bottle does withstand the force of the exploding gas, it may only do it once. In fact your cannon might blow up the first time you fire it, or it might blow up the hundredth time, you just don't know. Plus it's not going to give you any warning that it's about to explode. There is only one thing that is certain with glass, IT WILL EXPLODE AT SOME POINT!

in a champain bottle, the pressure gets to 6 bars (90 psi).....but, i wouldn't try to pressurize it myself.....use clear pvc if you want to see the inside....

DO NOT USE GLASS, I remember in chemistry class, we did this lab where we had to extract pure hydrogen gas from water, and to test if we had pure hydrogen in a beaker, we put a burning splint to it. The teacher did this part for safety reasons, when he did it, the force was enough to crack the glass slightly. Also, if for some stupid reason you are brave enough to do this, please reframe from winter use. Not only does glass get brittle in winter, but combustion = heat, the glass will heat up, and if you happen to touch the heated glass to the snow or something, it will break.

well if you do use glass remember to cover it in tape, like the lights on some race cars, it will prevent shrapnel well might not stop all of it atl east it will make less if not anything else. although covering it in tape may defeat the purpose (seeing the explosion) it will make it safer to a degree. As said above glass is brittle it is very easy to break, when using conbustion cannons the instatanious shock of the explosion might brake it the first time you fire it.

In my opinion these are words of people with no experiance with glass.I see no craetivity in this thread.Don't tell things you can't prove.My first auto combustion uses FLAT BOTTOM(more then 2" diametar) glass bottle.Sometimes I fired it with 2X O2 rich mix and no problem after so many shots with glases ofcourse.

If it was me I would have it built and never launch anything out of it...just have it too look cool, and it will. Of course you can hit it with some alcohol and use it as a flame thrower, thats as far that I would push it. I agree with Rambo, but this is homemade, any imperfection in the glass will be a weak point.

That sounds like asking to be ripped to shards by near supersonic shards of glass but that's just MY opinion!

PVC is risky enough, but if you are into large lacerations and hemorrhaging glass is the way to go.
