Couldnt u just use one of those model rocket motors and launch those... unlike the co2 canister, they leave a nice smokle trail... two problems with that though... one, those things can turnand go straight back where they came from (which is why rockets need fins) and... two, if one of them happens to go out of control while it is still lit and u are in a dry grassy feild... than you will very soon have a very large brush fire on your hands...

If something is going to classify it as a firearm, then i will simply walk down to the sherrifs office, and get my cannon registered as a gun.

co2 canisers as ammo is a bad idea you should shoot wiffle ball bats instead thats what i use they look like missile almost when you fire them. here check out the video

If you want a smoke trail, then you could just fill empty 12gram CO2 containers with KNO3/sucrose smoke mix and have a fuse coming out the end that will hopefully light when the gun fires. The fuse would have to be primed probably, and finding KNO3 is sometimes hard for somone who doesnt know where to look, but it is easy to find. PM me and/or leave a comment if you are interested and need more info.
Better yet, you can just make rockets out of this smoke mix. The only other thing besides the ingredients and a scale that you need is a hot plate. And yes you will need a hotplate, a campstove or regular stove will not work, they get too hot and will likely lead to problems.
