Has anyone used a fire extinguisher bottle for the air chamber on a pneumatic cannon. The one i'm looking to use can hold 160 psi, and i can't see any problems with using one. Anyone got any known problems with one?

Very Creative! I dont see a problem with suing one. If you have the right tools you should be able to do it.

no problem really, dont take the head off or drill it while its full :!: spraying all the foam out'll be fun though, spudinator has used one before, i think it had standard pipe threads when he took off the head, i'm looking at using an empty medical oxygen cylinder for a hybrid chamber or a homemade "watergun" with denatured alchohol and a pilot flame..... because the tank can hold 3000 PSI

yeah the thread on the bottle fairly standard , around the half inch mark, so i can't imagine it would be hard to fing fittings. The oxygen bottle would be sweet for the hybrid, super tough.
Just thinking of the extinguisher, i think that the bottle is aluminium or soft alloy (please correct me), so i'm wondering if i drill and thread it for air input or gauge will it hold or be possible, any ideas?

well teeka, pvc is also soft and it holds gauges and valves we tap in well, so aluminum should be fine

yeah i know, the heavy duty pvc the guys on here talk about is hard to get , so i am going for metal only because i have access to welders, taps, dies etc. Being from a farming town though, there are alot of pump and bore pvc and plastic pipes that are made to withstand high pressure easily available although they can be expensive and the joins are hard to find, i don't know what it is like for you where you are, you might have acces to big bunnings or something for joins.
Anyway i will work round these problems and make the most destructive cannon in the world......hahaha or maybe my small town

how thick are the walls on those extiguishers? i had thought about this before, but never wanted to waste the money on buying one just to be disappointed with the results. if they are thick enough to tap, i smell a new project coming. Oh, and what all is in that foam?

the walls are thick enough to tap yes, i would buy one thats got a pretty high pressure rating, that way you may be able to put it up to higher pressure than pvc, as long as your valve can handle it.

just out of curiosity, which chamber of the extingusher will you be using? would it also be possible to salvage the valve for later use?

I don't know about what its like overseas with theses things but, but where i'm from the locl car wrecker stocks a large amount of fire extinguisher that they get out of trucks and stuff, so i didn't buy one brand new. The one i got is a 2.5 kg carbon dixoide extinguisher pressurised at 2000 kpa or roughly 290 psi. Now i checked the botle and it has 2.5 mm wall thickness and made of aluminium. The bottle is about 13 inches long.
If you are talking about the cartridge when you say which chamber, the model i have , when you remove the valve the catridge comes with it. With regards to the valve, the one i got won't be reusable, as the spray nozzle and lever is all one piece unfortunately, so there is no easy way to connect the valve to barrel. but you could use it for something other then a spud cannon.
This obviously isn't stock standard, they're all different. One thing you can salvage is the pressure gauge. If you live in a coastal area, a oxygen diving bottle might be the go, same concept and they are designed to hold air...
I knew i should of patent the fire extinguisher idea, could of paid my mobile bill.
Cheers

I have and old fire extinguisher that is probably outdated by a few years ,so I'm curious to find out how tihis project will work out.I also have some empty propane bottles that might be good for something.

you had better make damn well sure that propane bottle is good and empty before farting around with it, im sure you knew that already though so I wont beat a dead horse here. I should check around in the trucks at work for discharged extinguishers that would make a nice chamber now that I think about this topic.
