I went to the cop shop today and asked someone who asked someone else who asked a firearms dude there. He told me that both homemade combustion or pneumatic spud cannons are legal. The guy said that they wont confiscate it off you if your using it sensibly (not vandalising, or harming people or animals), but if you do any of these things then they will take it and you could be charged for any damages or what not, and that seems very fair to me.

I asked him about the laws in Aussie and he didn't know (sorry experament-u2). But it is probably the same case over there as it is in NZ.

So I am gonna go back to the plumbing shop and try and convince this old guy with my mind powers to sell me that parts.

Specialist wrote:dude you have rights he has to sell you the parts you need. he cant tell you you cant buy parts cause your building a spud gun. i tell everyone im building a gun and if people dont sell me the parts i need. i would tell them about my rights and i mention that im not gana shoot it and i tell them ill call the cops if they dont sell me the parts. :D that would probably work cause if the laws are the same in NZ if you call the cops you can tell them that your gana build a gun but tell them that there is no harm in BUILDING A GUN there is only harm is you SHOOT THE GUN. and i should work also. :D
thats just my opinion but i wouldnt do it it creates a big scene

good luck!
He's right. People cant stop you from buying stuff you need. Its bullshit. I would create a scene too just coz it would be funny :P

They are legal here just depends where your at. As for me I build them where I live then take them out to my cuz's (one in 5 places aint bad) and we just let loose. You can do almost anything you want out there as long as its not in town. I love properties :P

As for Combustion launchers in NSW Australia they are Illegal I repeat Illegal a kid was fined $3000 for using one in a public place under the same laws firearms come under. So he was done for discharging a fire arm in residential area,unregistered,un-licenced etc etc.So look out.

Not so sure about the pneumatic launchers though but i suspect they would fall under the same category, probably only in NSW but as its the most policed state I mean come on.Laws against not have a Bell on your bike an $80 fine whats next registering bikes?

Behold the reason I love the bush. You can discharge any firearm you want. And our country is too up tight and the way were going I wouldnt be surprised if we did have to register our bikes.

This older guy has probly seen something bad happen with spud guns and think he's saving you life and you don't know it. He's probly think dumb kid don't know what he's getten into. I have to agree with pcguy, nobody has to sell you anything they don't want to. Question -- Is he a employie? Or does he own the store? Thus owing everything in it.

I know here in PA (in the USA) that both Combustion and phneumatics are legal here as long as they are used in a sensable manner, out of town though. And for parts of a spud cannon IE: stun guns, believe it or not I can own one and use it as long as it is not used to commit a crime. If it taken out of the box, then it don't matter what it was, because it will be used for somthing other than what it was intended for, 100% legal. I was told this from My local police department. Don't feel bad I was told the same thing from my local pluming store here too, but they found out they were in the wrong and now they want a picture of what it looks like when it is done. lucky me LOL

Wow you got fined $3000, thats a lot.

I also reckon that some people should just relax a bit, its a free country, there is too many laws against stuff that you can and cant do. And its all because one person had an accident or did something silly in the past and they instantly think that it will happen again, this doesnt just go for spudding.

Yea I know there is already a thread about this but i have one last thing to say... Shit happens

Pneumatics are not firearms (but in some places they are prohibited weapons). Pneumatics would fall under laws for air/pellet/bb guns. Some places limit air power legality by the velocity (fps), others by the energy (kj). There are other cases where spudguns are only illegal if you're using anything but food for ammo. The law varies greatly from country to country, state to state.

Quoting a phrase I heard on the radio today regarding the whole Don Imus incident... Unfortunately, we live in a hypersensitive society.

If there's a slight problem anyone has with anything, they will go out of their way to see it removed from their life. That's just how some people are -- maybe they have no lives or no friends or whatever, or they feel they need to have control over every aspect in their lives. Or they're just idiots. We just have to step around these people.

rna any clues on what the laws could be in QLD? i understand that spud guns do hold the potential of being able to cause bodily harm, ie if u shot someone in the eye with it. but come on... when will anyone try to commit a crime with one? seriously... if someone tried to rob a shop with a spud gun loaded with a broken glass sabot, i would laugh and take my chances and jump him/her.

on the other side, they say that it can be used to cause damage to property etc. it would be easier to throw an spud at a window then loaded up ur spud gun if ur sole intent was to break the window.

and what about sling shots? i see an extensive range of sling shots on sale to the public along with large calibre bb's at the local camping store. i asked about them and they just said u have to be 15yrs or older to be able to purchase one. if ur younger... ur parents must be with u when u purchase it. why are there not bans on these such "weapons" that obviously fall into the catagory (sp?) of potential of bodily harm and destruction of property?

unfortunately our "hypersensitive society" we live in only caters for a small fraction of the community, these people who have idealistic views on such petty things ruin the quality of life for the rest of their peers.

Well laws in QLD are usually much lighter then in NSW.In NSW BB guns etc have to be licensed as they are Category A Class weapons and must be kept in a safe with a the ammo kept in a different safe with a different combination/key.By the sounds of it in QLD there would be more lenient on them but maybe not so on the combustion launchers. As combustions are seen by nearly all people as more dangerous because of the flammable gasses and the noise.

As for slingshots, they are illegal in NSW as complete items
but you can own the frame and the rubber legally if they are not in one piece but the moment they are put together they are an illegal weapon, which come under the same laws as knuckle dusters, flick knifes etc.

I was not fined $3000 it was something my mother told me because she doesn't want me getting hit with a $3000 fine.

I might aswell go down to the local copshop and see about the laws on them tomorow as i have spare time!

Like Pcguy said, the store can refuse to sell you something if they feel like it. Sorry, but you do not have the "right" to buy anything, or at least, your "right" to buy does not overrule his "right" to not sell it to you.

Besides, the guy is really just protecting the company. If you blow your hand off doing something stupid you may sue the store.

I suspect the "old guy" probably thinks that young men are stupid (not all but most). And guess what. He's right.
