Warning On Spudgun Usage In Australia

If you live in a country where spud guns are illegal, OR classified as firearms read the following:

DO NOT EVER, EVER USE YOUR SPUDGUN ANYWHERE BUT ON YOURS OR A MATES PROPERTY.

I know many of you reading this are probably rolling your eyes, and Im sure at least one of you use your spudgun in public reserves/ other people's properties.
This was me, until today. From today on I will probably never use a spudgun again, and this is kind of my official goodbye. This is because I got caught shooting darts into a nearby lake, the guy who caught me was a bit of a conservatist. Anyway, he chased me and skhrnykhsk, who was with me at the time obviously, down with his car, and called the cops
We had no choice but to wait for them to arrive. The cops took my gun and destroyed it (which I only completed at a total cost of $158 last week), luckily I got off with a warning, but I was promptly warned that if I was to be caught again, I would serve a nice long sentence in jail.
I am 17 at the moment, which is why I got off lightly, but people over 18 will be dealt with as if they had been carrying ANY sort of gun. The penalty for this is a fine of several thousand dollars, and a garuanteed jail sentence.
You may think you can get away, so did I, and I'm paying for it... Trust me, taking your spudgun outside your property is absolutely not worth it.

I would have thought this rule could be taken for granted - would you use a firearm in the same circumstances? the same logic should apply to spudguns. As to the guy who reported you, he needs to get a life.

It's a hobby with risks.

General useage if you're doing it totally illegally e.g. no shooting rights on the land and illegal to have under law:

Carry concealed and ensure you're not going to be noticed by any member of the public when using it.

Best thing to do is to get some exercise and go somewhere a bit remote. Without footpaths near it. Preferably with cover to shoot from.

I agree, with you guys. Normally i shoot myne in my garden or in my friends house. Me and a mate used to shoot our ones near a park, there is alot of bush behind the park and it goes into a valley, so we go down a bit and there is cover and stuff. But walking home some old guy approached us about them and started talking about how when he was in the army they used to to practise shooting mortars.

Yeah I agree, the same logic should apply if where you live classifies spudguns as firearms or something along those lines. Personally I live out in the sticks so I can virtually shoot mine where I please but people in Urban areas don't have the same freedom. But if you take a drive out to the outskirts, a gravel pit, a large woodland area such as logging roads and etc.

cyanite what state are you in mate? Judging by the reaction of the polive id say NSW? Well mate you made a few mistakes.

1. You took you cannon/gun to a public place in veiw of the general public. The general reaction of said old dude is warrented. You where in possestion of a fire arm in a public place. Most people freak out.
Wouldn't you if you saw some guy walking down the street with a 12 gauge shot gun? with you have to remember not everyone has seen a spud gun and they will think its a real gun.

2.You where on foot? Always transport fire arm in a car. Police cannot serch the boot of your car with out probable cause and the cops really dont wanna look at you old underwhere that you use for an oil rag or even your 12 inch sub. they have better things to do. and ummmm mate why didnt you scramble? Said dude has no rite to hold you or chace you down with his car? dangerouse driving and unlawfull detainment are just two things that spring to mind.

3. Im assuming your unlisenced and unregistered? well mate that just speaks for itself. and im assuming the whole story isent as innosent as your making out. what where you shooting at what did you hit and why was the cop so pissed. I have the cops In NSW QLD and WA see my cannons and thay have a good giggle and think how it was like for them to be young. The only time i ever hurd of a cop going nuts like that was when the guy was shooting a people and property. the chances of people getting hurt? Sky rockiting!

Simply put mate you just have to go out of town and away from people when using your cannon. Put this time down to your own stupidity!

Haha, I also did my supersonic combustion death ray experiments in an UABAN BACK YARD

The one person other than myself who was most enthusiastic about seeing how it worked out was a police cadet neighbor....

Anyway the gun is not there anymore (and the projectiles wouldn't ever go more than a few hundred meters, and they were just a few dozen grams... but the cannot was LOUD. Supersonic).

Ok warrented the boys in blue are there for a reason. Hey I dont like em as much as the next bloke but you gotta give credit where credits due! They have a hard job and you just dont go around advertising this sorta thing in public.
This is what the cops ment..........
If we catch you again your going to jail and you get a big fine.

"Ok we caught you being stupid this time if you build another, for crying out loud dont let us catch you again."

Where going to distroy this weopon!

"Geeze wont this look good at the lock up. hey lets take it back and let it off."

Mate he would rather send you on your way with a pat on the back than have to go back to the station and fill out paper work.
Deep down cops are like you and me they dont want there job to be any harder than it already is!

Im in sydney NSW and my neighbors don't mind, one of my neighbors is a young couple and my other neighbors are an old lady and her family. They have all seen my shoot it and don't mind, they like the idea i made it myself. But i do have a silencer on my gun and my house backs on an oval so i shoot in the direction of the oval incase my bullet goes over the fence.

same here, none of my neighbors mind, actually they love it when i shoot, gives them something to watch.
cyanite,
I'm sorry about what happened, but what bubba said is true, cops are suprising open to spudguns and other activities some frown apon, but they have to do something just to keep from getting a complaint letter about not doing their job.
A word of advice, when being chased don't stop (unless its the police, but even then....jk), civilians can't do shit cept call the cops, or fight you, or maybe shoot you, but it's unlikely. I've been chased by people before in cars, and the best way is to get off the road and hop fences, zigzag, run through parking lots, parks, through residential areas with dense brush, under/above ground parking, through trees and dense brush, stuff like that. And when you think you've lost them, keep going, cause chances are you haven't.

that little tip should be in an Aussie Spudguners Handbook.
