I'd have to say that competitive cycling would be worse. But anyway, ya there should be three categories: Machined/Lath made, Handmade, and adaptability, as in how well you could scale the ammo up/down to fit in different sized barrels.

Yeah, those cats do sound good and fair. In each you could add sub-cats, that being: penetration, looks, concept(original, ingenius, good etc) etc etc (those were just rough ideas)
really good quote/phrase here

Surely a machined spudgun is better than a homemade one? So why does it apply to the ammo and not the actual SGs themselves?

It doesn't apply because we are having an ammo contest right now.

No, there wasn't but ammo is a different story because you can easily machine ammo, but you can't machine a whole gun, just parts. ( you can but it would be hard)

Now hold on a minute. If we keep making all of these new categories then there wont be enough prizes to go round (thats if there is going to be a prize).

How bout just keeping it simple, pneumatic, combustion, bbmg/airsoft guns, and perhaps a "slightly spud gun related" category for those who like to make mines, remotes, ammo etc.

Or maybe we could just have a whole bunch of glory categories.

Or who can design the best gun for under $100 and the winner gets the money for the parts to build it?Not my idea, but thats how the copperhead prime was made.

But you can't do budget based competitions in a forum where it's members are based around the globe since all the prices are different. I think sprinkler valves cost over 50 bucks over here to give you an idea.....

Well then don't use a sprinkler valve, the object is to design one using the budget, if you can't then thats your problem. I know how it would favor people in certain areas, but thats just something to live with/ all people are not created equal, some people will have advantages, such as available machinery..etc, or we could just have who can design the best gun under any budget and the winner gets a certain amount of money

If it were a budget based contest you could set it at something like 100US dollars, and alter it depending on where you live. (75euro, 105CAD, 126AUD, 120CHF, or 740ZAR would be the main numbers I can think of for our diverse member-base.)

I would agree with you but... in America you can probably get plumbing for half the price as you can here in Australia which meens you'll be able to get better or more parts which would make the contest unfair. :P

Unless what im saying makes no sence at all in which case let me know and ill delete this post.

What about the UK then?

At current exchange rates, that leaves only £50 GBP, which won't go far at all. Given that most UK cannons cost the same number of £ as US cannons cost $, but there are $2 to the £1, essentialy, a UK cannon costs twice what a US one does. If wannabie is also right, that makes spudding 1/2 the cost in America as it is in the UK and Australia, which covers a considerable portion of the rest of the forum population.

A budgeted competition cannot work internationally. You could exclude all but the US spudders, but that would alienate a huge number of people.

I still think that the best option is a general cannon competition, with the prize simply being voted as having the best cannon (how best is defined is the tricky part), and perhaps a place on the main page. Seems fair to me. And this time, there would be no reason to exclude new members from the running.
