There seams to be alot of noobish post recently. What i was thinking was to have a forum just for new people to ask questions. you could make this so that it doesn't show up on the recent post section.

I also wanted to point all of the new guys to this sticky, because a lot of the questions that are being asked can be found here.

We've had discussions like this before, and it still hasn't lead anywhere unfortunately. Sadly I think noobs are just a permanent part of spud gunning life, and their flaws should just be ignored unless it's a real problem.

What would a Noob forum accomplish? I agree that there seems to be a rise in this trend, but I don't think this will accomplish much. The main problem seems to be that they don't search or put abnoxious titles like "PLEASE HELP!!!!111one" on their posts. That doesn't have much to do with where their posts go except for the occasional question posted in a showcase forum.
Maybe some posting regulations would work better, but I don't know how that would work.

A noob forum would allow noobs to ask any question they want, no matter how stupid without fear of being flamed. This forum would not come up in the recent topics section and it's up to the members of the forum to decide whether or not they want to help out the 'noob's.

If not, then the 'noobs' have to learn themselves or continue asking. Since there topics aren't messing up our sections, we wont be bothered by them and should be in a better mood, meaning everynow and then you'll probably decide to help a few out.

Ah, I see. The only problem I forsee is that people won't answer "noob posts" and then then the noobs will either quit or leak their way back into the regular forums. But as long as people support them, I fully support the movement.

Me, I really don't mind explaining/teaching some one something they don't know.

The sections needed would be.....
1) Construction/Parts Questions
2) My 1st Working Cannon
3) Website Navigation
4) Complaints/Disagreements, (Get it out of their system)
5) Links/Plans (Links to plans, hand drawings and supporting threads, read only)

Thats all I can think of right now. Open to modification/suggestions. I would probly spend a lot of time there, modding/helping n00bs of course.

Thats why a partition/virtual server/parameters could be added only allowing new members in here after their membership was say 8 months old.

what we, as spudders, know is based on our personal experience and what we learned from others.. I would say that much less than 20% of our knowldege is based on our own discoveries/observations the rest is what others agreed to share with us...

threfore I don't understand people who flame noobs... if 5 people a week ask questions like "how does a piston valve work?" I undestand that it might be annoying ... but given the fact that construciton of spudguns is not something that is being thought at schools and it's mostly based on sharing one's knowledge and ideas I don't get why people complain so much about n00bs...

I suspect that the reason why threads like this one happend is because people like to look down on others and percive themselves as superior becasue they know how a piston valve works :?

finally, I know that lots of people tell n00bs to use 'search' function but hey it does not work flawlessly instead of starting threads like this one write a how-to on something or work on making 'search' function trully usefull

that is not why i made this thread. i learned almost every thing about spudguns from this site. this idea not only makes it easier on the more experienced but it also makes it easier on noobs who may get flamed for asking the same question in a different forum.

I was actually about to make a post just like the sticky i pointed to until i searched and found that one.

You've been here less then a year, so you haven't seen as much as some of the other members. It's just that when noobs ask you to do all the research for them, while they think they can just sit back and wait for someone to spoonfeed them over and over, it gets annoying.

We can't spoonfed noobs, otherwise they don't know what they are doing, only what you have told them. They need to learn for themselves and learn that we are not here to tell them exactly what to do so they can bugger off build a spudgun and never come back, because that does happen.

What aggravates me the most is probably that the noobs expect so much from us while they do very little themselves, they think that we are here just for them, when we are not. We are here for ourselves, to help advance the spudding community, not to teach noobs what to do.

Many other members, including myself, browse this website for months before even posting. We wanted to learn everything for ourselves, we didn't want to rely 100% on other members. Sure you need to ask a few questions, who doesn't. But if you haven't done the research, you will not know the principles, and they'll want us to teach them those principles. But you can't teach math to someone who does not understand it.

For example when I was on exchange in Europe I attended a German school for the day, one of the classes was Latin. I could not get taught Latin, if I did not know German to begin with. Same thing here, if you don't know the basics, it's very difficult for you to understand anything beyond the very basic.

hmm this thread makes me wonder if any of us was ever a noob here. i guess not. lol
honestly the mature way to handle this is answer there questions and accept the fact that this is a "forum". you cannot segregate a new member, it would only discourage him.

we should always help those that are eager to learn, i love seeing new members. btw we all have alot to learn from each other...

I was a noob, but what made me different to some of these 'noobs' is the fact that I did my research for a very long time before posting.

Many of the members who post at the moment joined within the last year or so, I remember quite a few of them that I helped out a bit with piston valves, what made them different to the other noobs was the fact that these members also did their research.

I doubt there are many members who post today that were once like the 'noobs' that we have problems with. Sure you go back a few years and most members started out like that, but the information was as available back then as it is now.

I've been on loads of forums and as far as i'm concerned we're pretty light around here. Most other forums don't always put up with crap from noobs, did it ever discourage me? No, it incouraged me, I knew that I was with people who knew what they were doing and had respect for what they were doing, not letting just any random person join and post what ever they want.

I waited quite a while after I joined to actually build something to post about, rather than just starting commenting on someone's thread. If people would be willing to do a little research, and make something interesting for their first post, we'd have a less cluttered forum, and probably a lot more innovations.

Unfortunately, the people this thread is referring to aren't willing to be contributing members in most cases. They're here to leech whatever they can out of the community to build something that'll make their friends think they're smart. I don't believe we have any duty to these people. Most of the valuable members didn't start off by leeching, they started off willing to learn and contribute what they could, and they stayed that way.

Remember the difference between newbs and n00bs - we were all newbs once. I don't think we should be as strict as Roguesci is, but there's no need to feed n00bs any more than there is a need to feed trolls.
