It allows members to troll anonymously and get away with things they previously wouldn't have had they been forced to use their Spudfiles username.

People can pose as other members and cause problems by trolling under that pseudonym. Sooner or later someone will probably PM me and say "why were you suck a dick to me on chat" only to find out someone was chatting under my username.

From a moderators point of view, it's a headache waiting to happen.
Ah. I guess I forgot that some people don't realize that a person acting wildly out of character is just a troll

Can you remember any other members also on chat at the same time?

In that case, I vote for chat to be disabled until the username thing is fixed.

I had that in the back of my mind when typing out my post :D

Edit: For the record, I almost never go on chat.

Next time I get a troll using a mod's name, I'll simply refresh the SF homepage to get a list of current users and PM the list to the Mod being impersonated. Overtime the common denominator will stick out like a sore thumb.

Mods, If you get the PM from me it will be the troll post and the current list of logged in users. If over time and several nights of abuse, the common users will be narrowed down.

Trolls will be there when the mods are NOT logged in.

Sorry, but they entered under your name.

I would be fine with losing chat until the username thing is fixed

that is just silly though. You cannot prove that you have searched and found nothing, or that you haven't searched at all. You cannot always find specific enough information to answer a particular question either.
The whole point of a forum is to discuss stuff, sure it can get annoying answering the same question for the billionth time, but I have done exactly that on other forums, it only takes a few seconds since you are so familiar with the answer.
Maybe it is just me but one thing I cannot stand is getting prewritten or prerecorded answers, sometimes searching through pages and pages of threads is like that. It's nice to ask a question and get a friendly response.

I would argue about my dislike for the no having 2 posts in a row or bringing up a thread that is a little bit old rules, but I probably wouldn't get very far with it. Editing doesn't bring a thread to the top does it? So if I have an update on a project then how do I let people know?

I voted to keep the chat, but yes, disabling it until you are forced to use your real username seem to make sense.

So if I have an update on a project then how do I let people know?
I asked myself the same question. I am guessing here that if you do it because it is necessary for a heads up and not a couple of minutes after your previous post, then I guess moderators will look at that misbehavior kindly enough ;-)

It allows members to troll anonymously and get away with things
I disagree with the "normal member". maybe I have too much faith in humanity :? Or I am just naive.
I believe you must be an idiot from the beginning, it just doesn't show that much when you are an idiot without an audience.

edit: Gah, I was hoping it wouldn't happen with this one because of the irony!

Double posting with an update (genuine significant update that has been made at least a couple of hours after the previous post) in not frowned upon on spudfiles.

Haha. I see what you did there.
Really? Hmm, seemed more strict than that when I read the rules. Maybe it's just me, seems to always be the case of me reading things a particular way. Haha

that is just silly though. You cannot prove that you have searched and found nothing, or that you haven't searched at all.
If someone shows up asking how to build a piston valve, or how a hybrid works, it's a pretty safe bet that they haven't searched. On the other hand, if they ask how to build an effective ETG, or how to find the sound speed of a certain fuel/oxidiser mix post-combustion (both topics which have been discussed here before), we don't tend to mind. Some things are simply so well advertised here that posting a thread inquiring about them clearly shows a total failure to search.
It's nice to ask a question and get a friendly response.
Which is what you'll get, after you've made some good posts and contributed to the community. The problem arises when new arrivals to the site create threads where they ask, with grammar and spelling on roughly a second grade level, a question to which the answer is given in very plain language in a thread stickied directly above the one they just posted.

Now, on to the actual topic at hand...

Much as I hate to say it, I'm with Tech on this one. If you don't like the current conversation in the chat, you're free to leave. The chat is not, as I understand it, a free service provided by the senior members to answer questions along the lines of "how do i bild teh pisten valv?". It is a convenient place for informal conversation among the members, and the anonymity can be quite entertaining at times. If you can't take a bit of banter being directed your way occasionally (and especially if you're the type who appears in the chat asking for instructions on how to make a burst disk), perhaps you shouldn't be socializing with people. We have a tendency to make fun of each other, and that's not going to go away any time soon. And once again, if you're too tired to bother trying to figure out who SpudBlasters 12 through 19 are, you're free to go do something more productive

I'm with DYI, if you consider how people act together, it isn't a nice scripted affair, they fool around a little. It is taken a bit too far sometimes, and trolls come around, but it isn't that bad.

If someone asks an intelligent question, even if it can be answered by a search and they've used the wrong terms, I'm happy to point them in the right direction, and I'm sure most members here are too.

If you want to know how long you should spray hairspray into a water bottle, go back to Instructables until your brain cells return to a semi-active state.

And never, ever, say "OMG you put too much fuel in there, its gonna blow up". That really gets to me.

Banter is OK.. Dropping a porn photo is not OK. I can deal fine with a noob asking questions. I can deal with some slightly not ok propellants in chat,

Porn not OK. dropping really gross photos for the shock factor and doing it while pretending to be a mod is NOT OK. I've chatted with most of the mods enough to know the style and juvenile grade school humor is not their style.

Agreed, nice people usually still come across as nice people online.
