Ragnarok wrote:Although I can see that there is much to come from a successful growth of spudding, a worry is that people will start to push materials past their recommended limits.

Perhaps things that exceed pressure ratings (or a general consensus of safe limits) should be considered exempt from awards for reasons of safety? Where things are not rated, an educated guess as to whether it is too much would probably suffice.

I was also concerned about that, but how can we determine what is unsafe? A lot of members here wouldn't have any problem with a safety factor of 2 or less on their theoretical burst pressure calculation, but I wouldn't get anywhere near that thing. And I've seen several people using components at twice or more of their rated pressure. What happens when people start lying about the pressure ratings of their components just so they can have a silly badge? It could start putting others at risk if they decide to go by the false pressure rating given by someone else.

BTW. GB Semi is 360+ RPM in full auto and it is powered by a fairly small compressor. I'd say the compressor is less than average size, although it can't sustain fire for more than a few seconds. I don't think 100 RPM too high of a goal, you could probably even do that with a pump action gun if you had a nice action to it.

Edit: Although I do agree that any mechanical loader regardless of size should be counted.

I agree that the ROFs should be upped... something like 250/500 or 500/750 sound better?

The problem I have with including any size mechanism in the ROF contest is that very small automatic systems already exist, and could very easily be duplicated. Something on a larger scale is much more rare, and would likely lead to many times the number of useful inventions, discoveries, etc.

I am looking at this as a means for innovation and advancement. As far as I am concerned, if we allow "small mechs" in the ROF division, we might as well let people use a .50 SLAP for the steel penetration division, as long as they loaded the cartridge themselves.

Clide, you make a good point, but I see it from a different direction than you. It seems if someone is 'hard core' enough about getting a badge to fudge safety margins and risk their lives, they would be concerned enough with being disqualified for doing so that they would just build safely. Not to mention disqualification would mean a 'waste' of a cannon that would likely be in the top five percentile for cost. That being said, I think the "death for a silly badge" problem practically takes care of itself.

Of course, let us not forget that people already do unsafe things. The reason? There are just some unsafe people. Badge or no badge people are going to be zig zagging across safety lines. If you ask me the aforementioned rules about cannon safety would make a larger percentage of "badge cannons" safe than the percentage of safe cannons currently posted on this site.

If you ask me getting concerned about people hurting themselves "trying to earn a silly badge", and not getting concerned about them hurting themselves trying to earn... I don't know... say... a $100 grand prize?... is just a little stupid.

As a final note, lets all remember that this hobby has a dangerous side just by its nature, as does most stuff people do. Driving cars, sky diving, shooting firearms, cooking meals, even eating food is a 'dangerous'. (E. Coli anyone?) I know we have to minimize risk, but we cannot be unreasonable.

Whoa!
7 pages already!!?
Seems like my idea was better then I thought :D

For the " maximum" badge in a class, there shouldnt be a max.
When someone achieved the best badge for example: Someone got the highest speed badge, then there should be made a new one with an even higher speed.
This way, there is no limit and always more challenges to beat. (well, lets say the speed of light is the highest speed badge)

When there are ALOT of badges to achieve, then I doubt if its useful to put em under your avatar.
Why not just view em on someones profile? And show the number of badges beneath the avatar.
The profile page should be made more functional.
On the page you should be able to see not only ones basic information, but also his badges AND all his cannons.
Maybe even a space for vids and pics.

Another idea:
Every badge is worth some points.
The amount of badges and points is showed beneath your avatar.
You can pick 5 of your badges to be shown too.
When someone goes to your profile page he can see all your badges.

Ah blast, I hate it when I write a post then accidentally close the window. Right, crude re-do it is then:

The ideas are nice, but carbon fibre? I doubt anyone would go that far, most likely there will be more Aluminium cannons though.

Perhaps ROF should be split into three bore categories (up to 3/4", 3/4 up to 1.5", and above 1.5").

If we track back to the bronze, silver and gold award ideas, and adding in STHORNE's idea for that the current max in the category gets the "field leader" badge, then perhaps we have a badge under the avatar for each of: Power, Velocity, ROF, Range and Penetration (but no need to have one for post count, that's still visible just fine, and adding a badge might promote useless posting) with a break down like:

- First level of achievement. This gets the badge with a white border.
- Bronze achievement. Border colour is obvious.
- Silver achievement.
- Gold achievement.
- "Forum Champion". Border colour would need some thought, or perhaps a different icon?

Again, each of those would be well split into at least a big and small bore category (or big, mid and small). Because to be honest, one set of achievements for all is going to give an edge to one end of the building scale.
Smaller bores will be easier to achieve high velocity with, as well as high ROF, but for "power", range and penetration, they will be behind.

Any other miscellaneous achievements can be shown on the forum profile - perhaps the badge count should be shown under the avatar as well though. That prevents the badge system taking up too much space on the regular forum pages, but provides a full spectrum of information.

lol, what a topic.
@spudfarm,
I like the idea of all of your badges on your profile page and then being able to show 5 (make it 6) under your avatar.

@Ragnarok,
(even though i already thought of it..kind of) very nice idea with the different levels of achievement.
