The diminishing quality of the forums as of late

Unread postAuthor: inonickname » Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:04 am

As of late myself and several others have been concerned with the diminishing quality of the posts and general knowledge on the forums recently.

In general, save for a reasonable amount of members, the forum is returning to it's style in late-2006 or 2007, where it was populated by mainly k3wls and retards. I know some of the people that are culprits of this sub-par posting are certainly capable of making much better posts, or at least keeping their mouths shut when they don't know what they're talking about.

I usually would not make an outburst like this, but the standard of posting and knowledge among many members is almost appalling. It's not only a slight lack of knowledge or information that is causing the degradation of many posts- some of this would be tolerable, however, the amount of pointless posts are gigantic. We have multiple pages of private chat or chatroom style conversation between members which nobody else wants to see.

Post count doesn't mean crap. People will respect (ha, internet, respect?) you a hell of a lot more if you just keep quiet when you have no idea what you're talking about and only weigh in when you have a decent grounding in the subject at hand. We also don't care for your relays between one another that belong in private chat.

Generally, I would simply leave this and hope the people spoken about would pull their act together. However, for fear of them not-getting-the-bloody-message, here is who this is directed at (including, but not limited to):

Gun Freak
Boyntonstu
Clemsonguy1125
Reedfe
Twizi
FORE
Jhalek90
Mr. Sandman
Colty Bear
Spudblaster15 (nang, I love you)

Thanks.

 If that ain't specific i don't know what is. I have acknowledged and approved this post. I hate to say it and I mean I really do, but I definately feel as this should be discussed with the entire population of the forums. So If anything this should be talked about rather than locked by a certain someone...

This is needed, I'm fairly new, but I can see that there is way to much shite posting.

This thread may get locked for specific naming, but locking it will not take away from whats done. If this gets locked it reinforces the decline of our forum

Yes, I agree. And in some cases, it's not even the lack of knowledge that is irritating, but the posting etiquette and, as inonickname said, pointless conversation.

I definitely see where you are coming from, I, and others, have tried in the past to address this issue but each time we're left with that knowledge that unless we turn in to that infamous explosives forum (forget the name now), we will always have this problem due to the nature of our hobby. One just needs to look at probably the first 5 videos on YouTube of spudguns to see that most people who use them are dumbasses whether they're only thirteen or thirty years of age.

I'll discuss with the Mods about the names you've listed, pretty sure you're going to have to remove them (if a complaint by one of the members is made). Except for SpudBlaster15, he's never coming off the list :D

Well said, and I tend to agree. The forum post quality as of recently has been absolutely dreadful, and many of the individuals you listed have played a large part in it. Since this is here, I'll address a few specific concerns I've been having.

Firstly, these forums are not a chat room! I don't care about occasional isolated discussion between members in threads, but when certain individuals (You know who you are) are starting up meaningless conversations in every thread they post in, it becomes rather annoying to deal with. If you want to have a chatroom-type conversation with someone, invite them to the chat and do it there. The forums should be reserved for intelligent, well spoken, and informative posting only.

Second, please try to refrain from posting advice unless you're very familiar with the topic, and aren't simply speculating without having tried what you're describing first. I've seen this very frequently as of late, and quite frankly, it's not necessary, and potential dangerous for inexperienced people who are seeking advice. Once again, the culprits know who they are.

Thirdly, can we at least try to improve the cannon build quality standards? I'm seeing lots of the same generic designs we've had for years, but most importantly, some pretty dubiously constructed launchers posted by members who overestimate their knowledge and abilities. Do we really want this forum to revert back to the ways of '06 when people were building hybrid launchers from pill bottles? I don't think so. A little bit of forward thinking and more emphasis on cannon quality and design would be nice.

Wasn't that around the time spudtech closed down ;)

There has been a lot of inane babble on these hallowed pages recently, but to be honest I just skim over it, one tends to know which threads aren't worth opening. We collectively spend silly amounts of time, money and effort making holes in stuff, which in the eyes of the pussified society we inhabit shows complete lack of maturity, making us all teenagers to some degree - so certain behaviour is to be expected.

I'm not saying it should be tolerated across the board, but natural selection is at work on the forum, so personally I wouldn't be too worried.

Agreed to some extent, but you will always have newbies who are not technically capable of jumping in the deep end with an innovative design and will make and post a pill bottle mini combustion as their first or fifth project. Certainly nothing new or impressive, but part of individual's development nonetheless, and not one that should be discouraged if this hobby is to flourish.

I have to agree with all of those except one:
Boyntonstu, yes i will agree he posts alot and some of his threads aren't really needed but he does come up with a good amount of high quality ideas.

But the real thing is guys- what can you expect? This site is heaven for an 11 year old kid because everyone went through the stages of "ahh i wanna maek an awsum grenade lancher" (maybe not that bad spelling) i will admit i'm 13 and i went through that stage (not as long as some of these guys) I'm guessing most of you did. It's very rare that you see a guy with under 100 posts (or even more) post an appropriate comment which has some useful infomation.

What about having a "Lounge Area" were people could put all their "Rubbish"
and there post count dosen't even go up.

Again, not everyone is the cleverest person in the world, you can't expect Everyone that joins this forum to know exactly what they're doing or even why their posts need to be adequit.

Another thing What about a "Newbie Section" were they could post things that they don't know about.

And again You could have an auto PM when you first join to explain to them that this forum isn't a relax and type away type of thing and that we're serious about all these things.

And why isn't JSR on there he hasn't made a working gun in ages :D they all just break.

This has nothing to do with making guns. If that were so, rag would be on there (even though he is working on something now). It's about the constant low quality, unneeded posts from these members.

I agree to alot of this, however I am not really the one to speak as I haven't been here for so long since I came back.
But the fact that I left when the forum probably was on it's peak and came back now really made me notice a difference.

As I remember the forum, there was always a discussion about something new that someone have been thinking alot about. The fact that people used their heads to fantasice about new ideas pushed the community forward.
Now there are mostly just discussions, not many new ideas.
And the innoative designs usually comes from the same posters.

Another thing I noticed is that a bigger part of the forum has converted to BB guns. Some of the BBMG builds is very innovative but mostly they are built from old ideas. Before I left (I think that was around 08 ) there was alot of trial and error that also helped push the forum forward.

When it comes to the "Useless" posting, I feel I could have done much better. I tend to write a little "Chat note" at the start of my post and then the point of my post after that. I will reduce the amounts of posts from me that is built up like that.

Good thing that you created this thread!

Edit: got a idea that might work. Is it possible to make a system so members can delete posts? So you can "vote" the post to be good or bad and if it gets a certain amount of bad votes it get's deleted?
