That's fine, living in Australia we'll never have the chance to vote for a proper politician anyway. Just as long as Abbot is out I'm happy

Any ideas for what to do with this? Basically the story goes is that we have a friend who lives in his landrover (he's 70, and it's about as old as him), he travels around and collects stuff and basically enjoys himself. Every now and then he stops in for a beer, dinner and to stay the night and bri...

"Putting junk in the chamber" is pretty well known, and is used in the form of schreckling spirals to initiate DDT in PDE's and the like

Be careful with the rags near the grinder. Also make sure you're using thin cutting disks (1.5mm or so) as they don't produce harmful shards if forced/loaded too heavily. The dust isn't nice, but it's better. Had a workmate have one of the thicker disks explode while cutting and slash his neck. IMO ...

I think the pay scale thing is lowered because of lots of apprentices doing the trade and putting their pay as fully qualified tradesmen. the tool makers where i work are on around 35/hr and that's bit low some other places go to 45/hr. I think a few are a bit on the low side, eg. 115k as an upper ...

That being said, if you're working independently on your own equipment and have to cater for overheads, the client should obviously expect to pay more.
As I said, it's my equipment and overhead, and I supplied materials and tooling.

Got asked to machine a part by my (ex) boss today, a collar/support from hardened steel. Simple part, but needed tight tolerances, hard steel and a good surface finish (plus, lots of boring). After it was done (4 hours) he was wrapped with the job and with how much money he'd saved by not getting it...

get a clamp on style knurling tool don't think the pushing ones will be very kind to you lathe edit: do you put a little radius on the end of your hss tool? that help get a better finish. Yeah the clamp on styles are a better idea, I use a push style but I've got a very large, rigid lathe. Knurling...

yep, but the high carbon content of a file (about 1.5%) and the purioty of the steel means that when heat treated right, it will give you at least as good results as modern HSS  EDIT: if you want, we can make a some sort deal from one made from bohler k510, i have "honed" the heat treating pr...

The way I have it, HSS has more tensile strength then the tool steel(file) but is not entirely as hard as tool steel, but tool steel breaks more easily thus it comes down to application to which is better. but in this case I will agree with the above properly hardened HSS will do the job just fine ...

Do you mean a facemill?

HSS is made for high speed and higher temperature applications. Better than a file at least.

Ideally carbide or PCBN is a much better choice

Okay then fair enough some decent tools will be my next purchase havn't had any problems with the lathe so far. i havnt been able to get a great finish on steel yet but im sure that will be down to the quality of my tools Could be the steel too. I've had some steels come up lovely with no effort, a...
