Don't use brass All thread. Stick with steel, 3/8 or preferably 1/2". You gotta grease the threads or you will run into problems. What are you on about? Carlman, I was simply elaborating on Jagerbonds all thread and endplates technique. He uses two large endplates (sorta like two overgrown flat was...

The things you can do with a large machine shop. Yes, "It" does work well but there are a few technical issues. I do not want to steal his thunder. Another thing, I made the pellets to 1.5 sched 40, his test gun has an aluminum 2" sched 40 barrel. Oh well. When the VMC is open, there is a larger mol...

JSR, Found some time to set up the pour. We had to heat the molds to around + 375° F before the tail started to fill nicely. Note the 9 volt battery and .177" (4.5mm) pellet in there for scale. Also a 2" UHMW blank for a pneumatic round we are planning. Oh, one of the first pellets that did not fill...

Mineral spirits eh?? I'll have to try that and compare. :) Gippeto, I read somewhere that WD-40 is based on mineral spirits. I can't confirm that. I will say that mineral spirits are much cheaper than WD especially in 1 gal or larger sizes. They smell real similar and evaporate at about the same ra...

If you want a great aluminium cutting fluid for the lathe that is not messy, try Varsol (it is a paint thinner, I guess any brand can do). I use the low odour quality. A trick that was given to me by a professional machinist. I am now thinking that it should work with a hand saw too, I never tried ...

Maybe try to find a machine shop with nice people, and ask them where they buy their metal? They could even give you some free or at a cheap price. Depends how nice they are :-) Mcmaster is not cheap. However, most metal suppliers want to sell you full lengths. Those selling shorter lengths (includ...

JSR, We make lots of fishing weight, candle and chocolate molds too. To keep the cost of the molds down we make them from the smallest blocks we can. We simply advise our clients to tilt the mold till no bubbles appear in the castings. The parting line is kept a little rough too, it is not air tight...
