Cans are hardly worth wile for casting. After you get a good pool of molten Al going, you can use a rod to push some cans to the bottom (if you try to melt them on top, the majority will oxidize and become worthless) you have to scrape off ungodly amounts of slag from the lacquer that makes up the l...

If you have natural gas that may be cheaper than LP... with all the benefits A household natural gas line is about a half pound. Unless you use a secondary compressor to repressurize it (say overnight) in a holding vessel, then use it in a short period, you will not have enough heat to do much to a...

Charcoal is cheaper, and much harder to control.

Propane is expensive, and easy to control. It also burns clean, and is usually the only option for a domestic setting.

Oil has it's ups and downs as well, more info can be had on the net.

Spudfarm, I have shown up to a meet without any launchers before, and it was still a blast. Plus, everybody knows submersion is the best way to learn a language. Call it an educational trip. I can see your hesitation to fly out for only a day though. In Vegas we had 2-3 days, and didn't fly f...

Spudfarm, your English (on the forums at least) is better than a large portion of people who speak it as a first language.

I wouldn't mind going, since it doesn't look like there will be a Vegas Meet soon, but I doubt I can afford the drive out there.

Wow, you guys got a pretty good little cluster there. Hopefully you can arrange a meet, even with fuel price where they are.

Glycerin isn't going to do anything more than using a bit of oil or something in your fuel would. It is not very flammable, and will not release ton of energy. Just because replacing glycerine's hydroxide groups with nitrates makes a high explosive, does not mean glycerin is for some reason a good s...

Bigbob, I never said it was impossible to make, just that you cannot distill it. At a certain temp, both the water and alcohol are evaporating together. This means you cannot get any further through distillation. You can still 'dry' the alcohol to 100% by following any of a number of methods.

It's pretty easy to distill store alcohol to higher concentrations. I've done it plenty of times myself. Then again I have a whole buch of chemistry glasses. It could be possible to make a distiller. Ethanol's azeotropic at 95.6%, and thus it cannot be distilled further. Isopropanol is even lower, ...

Well it seems you have a very small cannon for .02 mL for fueling. After a certian size a chamber using alcohol will fire again, if vented, without fueling it again. My record is 7 times on one fueling. If the cannon is small enough you can just use a cotton swab and rub the alcohol on the inside o...

There is another problem as well. In order to fuel an average size chamber accurately, you will need to be able to measure the alcohol to .02mL or so, then vaporize it when injecting it into the chamber. While you could probably throw some in and try to ignite it until there is enough vapor to do so...

One cannot say a cannon will never ignite if continuous sparking is applied, just because one test proved that trying to ignite a fuel air mixture in a 27:1 chamber designed for slow diffusion once every several minutes does not work. While these tests are certainly interesting and warrant further i...

Personally I vote against an electromagnetic section, this is after all "The Spudding Handbook". While I love to see these rare and awesome launchers in the 'non spudding related' section, I do not feel they should be included in the wiki. I over did it with the coffee this morning, but I was dead t...

I am on break from working the polls, so I do not have time to read all the recent revisions. It is a 14 hours day of work, so when I get home I will probably be too tired to do much. (I am working on 4 hours of sleep at most.) The good news is since we are in the county, and thus do not vote for ma...

The page is looking good David! There is more to be added, but the info on BBMG's was never given as much consideration as some of the work done on pneumatics and combustions. This makes BBMGs a hard page to work on, glad to see you are up to the task. MrCrowley, don't forget to put something in abo...
