Jsr I believe the live center was brought in because when it's cone shape is pressed into the spinning tube it almost perfectly centers it, the part is most likely loose enough to allow the few thou of movement that the live center caused. If not I'm sure LeMaudit will enlighten both of us.

The 3-1 slip-thread bushing may be hard to find but you could probably just nest a couple of bushings to get to the right size, it doesn't take up much more space.
