i see the diagram and the parts but am lost as to the position of the smaller aluminum piston and it also seems in the pic to have a notch or channel cut out from the tapered end towards the oring any help would be great

Yes i was going for a coaxial design the small groves were to allow the chamber to be filled past the piston or an equalization channels as there is none on the piston itself and a spring would also be used to aid in the sealing...
