Wadding

Wadding is essentially a sabot that merely fits behind the projectiles, and it preforms essentially the same function, but is easier to construct than an enclosing sabot.

They are often used to keep a delicate projectile from exploding upon firing, and/or to seal up small power-sapping gaps between projectile and barrel. common waddings.
