massive ball bearing

Post questions and info about things you have launched or thought about launching. No posts about explosive projectiles!

I took one of my launchers to work last week, had a bit of fun launching test tubes and various other lab materials across the plant, certainly made the hours pass a little quicker.

This morning, a colleague handed me what must be one of the most formidable potential projectiles I've ever handled, a massive 2.75" diameter ball bearing weighing 1.4 kilos which I'm told was once part of an oversized ball race on which a crane swivelled.

"Can you make something to launch that?"

Never built anthing over 0.75" caliber, but looks like that's going to change soon :D

a 2.75 inch, ~3.1 pound, ball bearing? holy mackerl, that'd put holes through cars if you weren't careful. just be sure not to kill anyone, or anything, because that would be most unfortunate. but post some distruction vids when your done, i wanna see steel punching through ANYTHING in its way.

If that truly is a 2.75" diameter ball, what you want is a 3" Sch 120 barrel. That would be a perfect fit.

I would make it a huge dual-valved launcher with interchangeable barrels for those balls and 20 oz soda bottles.

We found some 3" steel pipe in the plant, woo yay!

I'm thinking unsophisticated so we'll probably go down the combustion route, since I'm mostly into pneumatics how do combustions like heavy projectiles?

I doubt that pipe is the right diameter. The one I found was PVC and sch 120.

Combustions don't like heavy as much as pneumatics but they can still work fine if you do it right.

The latke tests showed a significant preformance increase from using heavier ammo; their tests at 10g/in^2 and 12g/in^2 where 15% or so less powerfull than their tests at 27g/in^2.
However, I don't know how well this will corespond with your results at 380g/in^2...

I'd rather go pneumatic but not looking to spend much cash on this and I prefer finer engineering with smaller calibres, so combustion looks like the probable route. With a three inch barrel there'll be several hundred pounds of force acting on the projectile, it should come out with some force. Even if I just get 50 feet per second, this thing will destroy something if you just drop it, let alone being projected.

Just wondering, what are the laws regarding blackpowder cannons where you live?;)

You can have up to 5 grams for personal use, but trafficking carriesd a heavy fine and potential jail term [:p]

I think I´ll make the effort and go the pneumatic route, maybe pop by the local hardware store after work and see what I can find. The problem is that since we´re all metricated round here, 2.75" PVC is going to be hard to find, but worth a shot.

I'd like to see that shot out of a massive hybrid, just my personal opinion.

A kid that lived down the street had a steel ball that size. He claimed it was from a train. I wish I could find it now...
