I stopped because I realized that I don't have any way to interface with the rangefinder. I could have bought one and tinkered, but I have an annoying habit of frying most expensive electronices I tinker with.
Also, I didn't want to deal with the anemometer.

I'm sure if you called a few electronics or robotics specialists around the place and explained that you wanted to hook up a range finder with something, one of them would be able to do it for you.
