That battery's going to have quite a lot of momentum so it needs to be securely packed to stop it moving around during both the acceleration of launch as well as the deceleration of impact. Also, if you want the rocket to be reusable you'll need a way to remove and change both the battery and the rocket motor itself. You also have to make sure that the circuit is broken once the motor is ignited, otherwise if the battery remains shorted until recovery it will probably burn out.

Duck tape won't hold it....

I was thinking or a small hearing aid battery with a small LED light. Placed in the nose cone. The rocket motor will be held in similar ways that regular model rocket is held in. W friction fit with a simple clip in the tail end of the rocket. The engine and cone will easily be removable and replaceable. As for ignition of the engine... wouldn't the primer be blasted out of the rocket separating the terminals of the battery?

Your probably right, hadn't thought of that...

Paint the rocket in the glow in the dark paint may be? And expose it to a black light right before launch. Or use the rocket to ignite a small smoke bomb so the last part of its flight is visible?

I know the Estes rocket had the auto eject thing. The most work I would do is a streamer. It slows the decent enough to survive impact with out a doubt.

The goal for me is distance so if the rocket reaches the apex of the trajectory and deploys a streamer or parachute it would almost completely stops and drift down. We want it to continue on the trajectory until it hits the ground slowed only by drag caused.

A streamer or parachute would limit distance...

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hello, first post.

This could be possible, however unless you have a metal barrel, you REALLY dont want to ignite it on route to the end of the barrel.
And large dia metal pipe is just too expensive.

Just get a neatly fitting rocket, slosh the inside of your pipe with oil or water, for lubrication and seal.

Once the rocket has fired, you want it to fire its engines, while its treavelling at roughly the same angle as it left the chamber.

Now, either you could invest in astronomically expensive gyroscopes, or you could have:

The remote conrol idea, excellent if the rocket aint gonna be pulped after the first go and you have good perception and reflexes.

Or, my little idea:

Image

There is a safety key coming from the end of your barrel to a slot in the back of the rocket. When the rocket gets far enough away from the barrel, this is pulled out, completing the circuit, frying the ignitor and igniting the motor.

Flaws:
Snagging in barrel of ripcord.
Snagging of rocket, failure for contact to come out of rocket. Rocket spins round, whacks you in face.
The ripcord lashes back at you, scarring you for eternity.

Cheer up, it just may work, if your daring enough to try it.
Personally I would go for a simple RC protected in back of rocket, so when the rocket ploughs into wall, its saved to fly again.

Nice idea. I'm going with PVC because its cheap and I'm planning on remote triggering the gun... not with R/C with just a small box to control valves. So if it screws up the barrel it would be cheap enough to replace.

Interesting ignition system.... I'm going to have to give that some thought.

Thanks

Wha?? We are ramming it into things?? Ohhhh. BC it doesn't have to be replaced if it lands lol.

Heyyy just thought of this, and it suprises me that I did so late in the game. Get some cannonfuse, stuff it in the end of the rocket motor. The fuse burns at 3-5 seconds per inch, depending on the manufacturer, and you could drill a hole in the barrel for it to come through. Select a proper length, light it up, and fire when the fuse passes through the barrel hole.

I wasn't planing on using it. Currently its tied up into several R/C planes... however if I need to use servo to trigger something. I might consider using one. But I wouldn't risk a hundred dollar recevier, battery and servo in something that would be destroyed.

Duh... cannon fuse! Great idea will it burn hot enough to ignite the engine though?

wouldn't you want the rocket engine to ignite way after the air cannon has fired it because the rocket if it had an air tight seal is going to go pretty far with out the engine so it be kool if you could have the engine ignite when it reaches a certain speed or altitude if you did this the rocket will go so much further then your previous idea i think but i don't no and i was thinking about this a couple of days ago weird.

You would want the rocket to fire when you the objects velocity was the greatest so the rocket engine could maintain or accelerate that velocity.

I would have to look into it but the more and more complicated you make these things the more cost prohibitive it becomes...good idea but I think it would be rather complicated.

It will definitely burn hot enough. I have done it before actually. But if you are using 1/8" fuse you may have to scrape a little clay out of the nozzle depending on what engine. The stuff I got I am pretty sure burns at about 1000 degrees.

Try this site if you are in the U.S. They usually get it to you in 4 days or less, have quality product, and very good prices.

If not, try this one in the ignition section. Have yet to order from them, but hear nothing but good things about them.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I got the chinese waterproof 1/8" fuse. I doubt it will go out or anything. Has a really nice flare to it. Self propelling! :D
