just post some of your other ammo that you have used... i have used...

1/2 inch steel bolts... different sizes but w/e im not putting them all down
acorns
cucumbers
cans of cream corn
soda bottles
snow
airsoft bbs packed with wadding underneath.. cotton balls for a 1/2 inch barrel works great. good spread.
cap gun ammo.. shot it at rocks and watch them explode!!
\ steel bb's work good too especcially if they are really heavy.
d batterys work good on 1" 1/4" barrels. aa battery's for 1/2 inch.
cadbury eggs for 1" 1/4" as well
the famous watergun of course.

As for me, the two main types of ammo I'm exploring right now are the steel cored APFSDS variety, and discarding saboted cannister rounds carrying either grapeshots or flechettes from demilled 105mm beehive rounds.

I'm confused on the subject of sabots... How do you put them on? I tried wrapping part of a plastic bag around a battery and firing that, but I got less power than with a potato... does the sabot need to go behind the projectile? If so, what could I use as a sabot... a potato might work...hmm

What you're doing is wadding, a sabot is a bit more complex.
They're either discarding, or non discarding. Either way, they're used to allow the shooting of irregularly shaped or too small projectiles.

Non discarding sabots can be as simple as wrapping an object in tape.

Discarding sabots can be a bit more difficult, but they are generally two or more parts that fit around the projectile in the barrel, and fall away after it leaves. They don't have any real connection with the projectile, and you generally need some sort of stop behind them to prevent them falling behind the projectile in the barrel.
