What are the dimensions of the pipe you wish to cut? I've never tried, but I would imagine it could be cut on a table saw. With the right blade, I've ripped 1/4" aluminum plate with no problem. Spray her down with some WD-40 though and go slow.
That is if you have access to a table saw. If not, as killjoy said, the dremel is your friend

while we're on the topic of cutting pipe sideways
is there a way to cut galvanised steel pipe down one side...
would a dremel with a cutting wheel be enough?

You can actually convert a cheap wood band saw to cut metal pretty easily, I got a book that shows how. You just have to gear it so the rpms are low and throw on a bi metal blade. Just thought I mention that.

Like frank said, LOTS of disk and LOTS of time, probably cost a lot too. It would be a lot cheaper and easier to use a grinder with cutting disks, and you can find a decent one online or at a discount tool store pretty cheap now days. That's your best bet.[/quote]

making one small hole (0.5" by 1") toke me about 1.5 hour
it can be done but it's not practical in any way
if you want to do it to make a breech loading or something like that it would be better if you use copper or aluminium pipe

I think an angle grinder would be your best bet, as long as you don't mind a wide cut.
