Hi,

Piston as a soup can? :P
debating wether or not i need to fill it with something
Answer would be yes.
Reason being is because the dead space inside the soup can will add up with pilot valve area, resulting in a under performing valve.

Mind that you would want to keep the piston light as possible, So i would recommend Foam or other type of light material

Good source of light material is Styro foam or the meat tray package, and maybe even the kids playing mats work well.
