I was wondering if thers ammo you could make or somthing you could do to a potatoe to make it go farther. Because I dont have an money to make a better gun and my ammo is only going like a hundred yards.

Make the end of the potato slug tapered so it's more aerodynamic, make darts out of paper, use empty caulk tubes, make slugs out of wax.

you could use gollf balls they go really far unless you have a barrel thats smaller than 1.5" sdr-21
if you need to just wrap them in duct tape, the tighter the fit the farther theyll go

or if you have 2.5 in barrel or bigger tennis balls filled with something like pennies, anything the gives it weight should work fine

or you can do what i do alot and just find random things that arent to light and wrap em in tape if needed

i shoot tennis balls with pennies alot out of my friends cannon and yeah you have to hold on tight to the cannon or it can hurt nothing to serious though just a bruise

So is the general rule "the heavier, the better?"

you dont want it to heavey or it wont go to far and to light wont go far you want something more medium weighted, and the heavier the ammo the harder the kick

a few pounds works good in my cannon but it varies cannon to cannon it depends on the size of your cannon

Yeah basically the hevier ammo will go farther, unless your cannon is too weak to shoot it fast enough. So the more powerful the gun, the hevier the ammo should be.

What you want is density, not weight.

Areo-dynamic, weight, power, weather conditions are all factors to consider. I use super balls myself, i've gotten about 200 yards on a good shot!

There's a number that gun people call a "ballistic coefficient" - mass devided by surface area devided by the Cd - and that's basicaly what you want (with mass restrictions to keep muzzle velocity reasonable, of course).

*High mass
*low area (dense)
*low Cd (darts)

As far as projectiles that arn't shaped like darts go, a lead sphere on the order of 1" (35g) would probably be ideal, or by a steel sphere of similar dimensions, or (although not nearly as good) a reasonably round rock about 1.5" in diameter.
