My dad (who is a licensed plumber) told me that primer is nothing but concentrated rubbing alcohol with dye. He says the dye is a legal thing for inspectors so they can tell if people primed their joints. Is this true? So all we have to do to get clear primer is to get high concentrate alcohol, (higher than the 70% at the pharmacy)?

he could be right, He could be wrong, But wouldnt primer be cheaper then concentrated alcohol anyway? Also its hard to see where you have primed without the dye. I'll just stick with the primer to stay safe.

alcohol cant be concentrated, alcohol is alcohol, the difference is how much water it has in it. 100% alcohol = 200 proof.

And im 90% sure primer is not simply alcohol, while it does have some in it to help clean the pvc, it is not a strong enough solvent to actually soften the pipe.

Primer contains acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and other chemicals. Not alcohol.

Primer is a noxius brew of several chemicals - but (IIRC) does not contain any alcohols.

If he persists, you can probably point out on the can where it lists the ingredients. (well, at least my can does)

Not sure what happened to my reply to this topic, but...

If what you said was true, then clear primer would be illegal
PVC primer is Methylethyl Ketone, Acetone, Tetrahydrofuran, and Cyclohexanone.

As you can see, no alcohols.

Hmm I don't think clear primer is illegal, I think it's for projects that don't include commercial buildings, and homes things that never need inspection by a goverment officail.

maybe you can get away with just washing the fittings really well with acetone, cause most pvc cements ligtly disolve/ soften joint anyways. I even tested

cement is nothing more than primer and a few added glue fillers to help bond the pvc.

so It's ok to not prime joints with primer as long as you clean it really well with strong cleaning agents such as acetone and achohol, and use the correct amout of pvc cement (tons of pvc cement)
