For what I have come to understand, many Dutch take pride in knowing and using English effectively...and from what I can tell sometimes better than some do in English primary speaking countries...Brian the brain wrote:Edit: damn, half of it is in Dutch...Oh well, we all speaky littlebit English..

Thanks for the website tip.

I haven't noticed...
Whom, may I ask, gave you that idea?

A company I used to work for has an office in Haarlem. I was on a management team that included a couple of their guys there. They visted the States several times and I got to know them fairly well. They offered the comment freely and I've seemed to notice it since then as well.

Funny. This year New York celibrates it's 400th birthday.
New York was once New Amsterdam.
You probably now this.It was a Dutch colony.
A lot of Dutch names live on there.
Brooklyn was once" Breukelen", after a Dutch city
Harlem was named after the Dutch city of Haarlem
Broadway was once called "broodweg" wich means "breadroad"
The idiots traded it with the English for Surinam, wich seemed a good choice at the time, given it's ideal location for trading African slaves.
We should own the "capitol of the free world" but no...We chose the slave business....Idiots...

We did get very stinkin rich from that you know. And as we dutchguys were the "best" country concerning transporting slaves out of Africa, Suriname was a very attractive piece of land to own.We should own the "capitol of the free world" but no...We chose the slave business....Idiots...
Hey at least Suriname doesn't catch planes with skyscrapers.

Note that both suriname and new york are not owned by their foreign owners anymore, so actually it doesnt matter much, besides that Dutch might have became world's primary language instead of english.
