The belt comes off the horizontal pulley (on the mower deck) takes a half twist, runs around the idler and tensioner pulleys, takes another half twist, and lines up with the (vertical) clutch on the front of the engine.

Exactly what you want to do...in reverse. V-belts with kevlar last longer for power transmission.
The set up he's referring to is commonly known as a "mule drive". Very common on 60's and early 70's models riding mowers. John Deere, Case, Cub Cadet (IH models), Bolens, Wheel Horse just to name a few all used them.

How ever your best bet would be to find a junked cheepo Montgomery Wards or Hechenger, Craftsman any riding mower with a transaxle drive. You will know it by seeing the V-pulley on top (once removed from the chassis, 4 bolts and some linkage and the belt) and it will have a shifter sticking out of it.

It's your best bet with the little engine your using, plus most of them are 5 speeds with reverse. All you need in 1 unit even brakes.

Might be the way to go....you get brakes in the package too. :)

Lots of old Peerless transaxles around. :)

I have an old YardMan Lawn tractor depending on where you are. It's the transmission with the vert. shaft and V-belt on top. Has brakes, forward, reverse, neutral, everything you need. I really need to get rid of the mower as the engine blew up mid-mow.

Just curious, what would be an application for such a small differential?

Id just keep your eyes peeled for a horizontal motor, theyre not too hard to find, I put out a craigslist wanted ad and someone gave me 3 of them all running, made a decent little gokart, and Im working on a second. Also there are modifications you can do to vertical engines that make them work just fine horizontally.

:D

We might try to modify it to run horizontally. Or get another motor. Hell... This mower is perfectly fine. Haha

I can't see that working with the oil delivery system (dipper). Tilt a vertical crankshaft configuration on it's side it loses it's ability to distribute oil to the necessary parts to keep it running. There isn't room enough to add or modify the parts to make it work.

A horizontal crankshaft configuration will work if you use the right clutching set up.
