Hey Jack your video says no longer available. What would be the difference between this and one of those cheapo laser pointers? I was reading people just hooking up a couple batteries to a dvd burner laser and it worked but then I read somewhere else you have to buy a laser diode. Is it really that simple?

No, you get the diode from the the DVD burner:
Once I had the DVD drive, it took me less than 15 minutes to completely strip it and extract the optical works. There were two diodes, lots of little mirrors and things, and some circuitry. It took another few minutes to extract the two diodes with their heat sinks. The rest of the optical bits and pieces were saved, as was the motor that opened and closed the drawer - it can be used, with a mirror, to do effects. Everything else was junked.

the thing that makes a cheapo laser pointer and the dvd bernur one different is the fact that the dvd one is made to burn little tine miceoscopic holes in dvd and cd disks which are hard plastic so the diode needs to be pretty strog. cheap laser pointers arn't ment to burn stuff for a safty issue.(imagine every little kid havind a burning laser pointer and pointing them at each other lol)

As far as I can tell, MW is milliwatts, a measure of power, while NM refers to nanometres, a measure of the wavelength perhaps?
