so i was sitting out in the garage today screwing in a bottle of propane into a torch. I heard the swishing of a liquid inside and instantly thought liquid propane. So i got an allen wrench and held the bottle upside down and shoved the wrench into were you thred the torch to pop the valve. When it opened a big whosh ofsteam came out and i also saw a jet of liquid come out protected inside the vaporized propane jacket. it only took me a minute to come up with ways to utilize what i just found. I could get steel so cold that when shoot with a nail from a powder acuated hammer the steel would shatter. iwas also able to instantly freeze water for ice slugs.

Anyone else done this before or have ideas of what it can be used for?

ive done it before just for fun, but its really just a waste of propane. look up stacked peltier coolers, low tempeture fast, and effeciant.

You realize of course that doing this is creating a HUGE explosion hazard?

A light switch, water heater, furnace, or just a dropped tool could send you to the next county (actually, several counties, since you body will be in many small pieces).

In other words, this is an incredibly stupid thing to do.

If you want to cool something a CO2 bottle would be much safer. With CO2 you only have to worry about killing yourself via suffocation.

Call around to local grocery stores and find one that cells dry ice. Much safer and cheaper.

If you do this with butane, you can really see the liquid butane boiling.
If you put alot of butane into something like a test tube, it will be filled with a clear liquid that boils, unless you put your finger on the end so the pressure will build up.

Also I once cooled down my bed mattress by pushing in the (non flammable) gas canister of an air horn into it.

Quite funny experiments. But a waste of gas in the long run.

Jimmy is right, i did it outside. I only did it because The stem was askew, si i was trying to straigten it.

of course i did it outside im not that stupid

ive seen rooms that havr been f'ed up due to natural gas leaks so i completely know what could happen if something decided to go wrong which is y i take every step to minimize the risk except i guess using the powder acuated hammer so soon after venting the tank

I just tried that. Don't worry I didn't exsplode, I'm not in the states. it's pretty cool.
