Served/Serving in the Military

I decided to start a topic for those who are currently serving in the military and those who are veterans. Feel free to post your rate/occupation/branch of the military you served in. You can include any other info you’d like to share as well! I thought it would be interesting to see how many of us are out there.

I’ll start with myself. I served in the Navy for 4 years as a Damage Controlmen (DC). I did all of my technical training over at Great Lakes, Illinois and after that I spent 90% of my time aboard ships. I was then honorably discharged as a Petty Officer Second Class.

I served the military for about one day, then the head brain doctor told me to go away- for at least two years....

This is a SPUDGUNNING forum......right?

my dad has been in the air force for 26 years, and is still in for 2 more years. He is a Senior Master Seargent, and is going for chief. He does BioEnvionmentalEngineering, like testing water and doing air sampling. He just came back from Afghanistan a few months ago.

NSGRD or not, I still suspect the mods are likely to lock this topic, because NSGRD relates to members projects rather than this, which is off-topic (instead of project related), so it should really go to Theopia.

The other reason I say this is that although I recognise that we have quite a few members who are/were part of the armed forces, the fact of the matter is that the last time we had a member who was too open about his own service in the military, we had two permanent bans because of an argument that sprouted from it.
Now, I'm not too fussed about not seeing Scottcrete around, but I think this forum could have done without the loss of Novacastrian.

For that reason, do you not think we should avoid walking the same path again?

They both got what they deserved but hashing that episode over again is really pointless. I don't believe the path need terminate in a dead-end if everyone will remain civil.

@rag I have to agree with you... Military might be an interesting topic but one way or another it's closely connected to politics.. and everytime there is a topic that has anything to do with politics some people go nuts..

IMO it has something to do with high testosterone level (AKA 'no sex syndrome' or 'I've broke my right arm syndrome') and that sort of things

and yes it's a shame novacastrian got banned... but he shouldn't have done what he did...

ohh one more thing, IMO there is nothing wrong in discussing military hardware, anylising their internal construciton etc, but I got tired of politcs and I visit spudfiles because I am interested in spudguns.. if you want to discuss politics/talk about military service/use swearwords then do it elswhere

I don't pretend that anyone gets banned for nothing, this forum is reasonably forgiving as far as that goes - but I still think it would have been far better to have avoided that incident entirely.
if everyone will remain civil.
This is an internet forum. People can easily become uncivil in an instant over some real or imagined slight in someone else's post - and most likely one due to an unintentional and less than clear phrasing.

One of the reasons History is taught in school is so that Man will not repeat his same mistakes. If one is allowed to tread the same path, the inevitable WILL happen.

I'd have to agree with Rag on this one.

But in practice what History actually shows Man is that no matter how many times Man has done something dumb before he will inevitably do it again.

The Russians had a go at (an American backed) Afghanistan not too long ago for example. The Russians had a very expensive and unsuccessful time, when the Russians left so did the Americans and the Taliban took over the mess that was left.

The irony.

But still, at least History gives us something to have a browse through.

how about this: Knowing history can help man prevent it from repeating its self but is only a path that one has to take and not a sure solution. In order to prevent history from repeatign ist self the leader has to be smart eanoth to take that path way.
Metaphorically speaking it would be like a hold on a mountain wall which one may or may not sucsessfully use, inorder to climb his way through lifes big mountain, but it can decide ones fate and though it exists and may save one it may also be ignored without playing a sifnificant role until later.

i was not asleep this english class, obviously!

Since when did this turn philosophical?

We're on a Spudgun Forum.
Non-Spudgun Related includes; Theories, projects and serious questions.

This thread doesn't particularly further anyones understanding of much..
Just as a 'I did this, I'm better than you' thread.

Pointless.

I didn't mean to get everyone speaking all philosophical and stuff. I was just agreeing with Ragnorok...

Sorry for goign with the general trend of this thread...It was getting into the whole history repeats its self stuff so i was fairly sure it would be ok to speak metaphorically, sorry if that offended, annoyed or something elsed you...

Once more going with the general trend i have to agree though this would be a great little dsicussion it does not match the first post and this in turn is too off topic for a spudgunning site even in the off topics section.
