Surfcasting is a casting technique which separates the surfcaster from the ordinary pier or boat fisherman. Specialized, two-handed casting techniques are used to cast the lure or bait the added distances required in many cases to reach feeding inshore fish. In these casts the entire body, rather than just the arms, are utilized to deliver the cast. In addition to standard two-handed casts, veteran surfcasters may also resort to the pendulum cast (derived from tournament casting contests) to achieve added distance - in some cases exceeding 700 feet.In Nova Scotia a common form of tackle for striped bass is a 3 ounce lead weight(sinker)attached by a brass swivel to the end of 20-25 lb test. Two to 6 leaders with bass hooks are then attached aprox 12 inches apart starting from the weight and working back up the line. The weight and tackle are then baited and cast into the surf. A strain is then held on the line lifting the bait within the feeding zone .

What is the stored energy when the rod releases the 3 oz. weight?

Hmm! I have an idea of combining a fishing rod and a Thera Band silver slingshot rubber to launch a projectile (much lighter than 3 oz.) at high speed.

(BTB, Joerg, understand my cast?)

I would guess the bend in the pole. So it's kind of is a slingshot already.

I agree, you have better luck reaching that kind of distance with a true surf rod. Bottom fishing is great fun. I can't count or remember how many knights I spent on the cat walk of the Conowingo Dam cat fishing!! Good times. Unfortunately 9/11 happened and they closed down the cat walk :( .

I'd have thought a mere 7' pole would be sufficient to get in the way of a respectable ceiling :)

I'm surprised someone hasn't linked to a fishing pole like it. Someone at Maker Fair used a 10 meter Carbon Fiber carp fishing pole to take Ariel photos.

Here is a page of the photos taken at Maker Fair that gives a sense of the height.

and here is the photography setup.
