Found this little guy sunning himself in my parking spot this morning. Thought it was pretty cool so I took a pic....

Is it a rattle snake? BTW jrrdw will lock this

I don't think there is any reason to lock a wildlife photo, unless that is a target or projectile.

It looks like a Western Diamondback to me.

It's a sidewinder.

Without watching it move, I'm not sure it is a sidewinder. On second look it looks like this Mojave Rattlesnake;


The markings on a Sidewinder look like this. Due to the dark markings by the rattle, this probably is a sidewinder. The pattern on the back are more diamond shaped like the above than the cheveron seen below, so without seeing it move, I'm not sure.

I assure you, 'tis a Sidewinder. We've got them and Mojave rattlesnakes aplenty at the office. I'm reasonably well versed in IDing both. The biggest thing to be aware of is that in both cases markings are terrain dependent; particularly for the Mojaves. In the case of the Mojave, you can have one snake on one mountain be a bright green...and a couple miles away on the next mountain, a Mojave might be a dull red. They quite literally have adapted their coloring to match the exact damned mountain they live on. Seems kinda hard to believe, but it is what it is.

In any event, the snake in the OP is a Sidewinder.

Yep thats a rattler all right... i see them every now and then out here at my house, I only see the baby ones though. I know they are babies because they always play with their rattles.

Haha cool. I just found a baby snake sitting on the roof of my moms car a couple days ago... It was only 6-8 inches long so I have no idea how it got on the roof...
