i need to cut a V into a peace of 10mm round bar but not all the way though, only about half way down.
So far iv tried to hammer a peace of square D2 tool steel into the edge but its hard to hold it down good enough.
So how would you do it?

Mill. If you can't get one and precision isn't needed use a grinder, files and cold chisel to do it.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do here. Also, I think something crashed earlier because the forums just would not load.

If you can't get one and precision isn't needed use a grinder, files and cold chisel to do it., yeah it doesn't need to be perfect a mm or two wont matter. Ill try a cold chisel tomorrow but the problem is i cant hold it down good to be able to hit the [woman part], maybe il weld it to some flat plate.

Why not put it in a vice or clamp it to a bench?

Grinding then finishing with a dremel with a real small bit could get you sorta close.

tryed clamping it but my vice is crap and it slips out every hit, if i tightened it more id crack the vice. i could try a G camp to the bench.

Before I had a mill, I did this with a file. If it's a steel bar, rough it out with an angle grinder and finish with a cutting disk on a dremel.
Or send it to me and I'll do it for like $2...

but harder to hold. Also the tool that's doing the cutting gets hot and soft as well. Possibly screwing up its heat treatment and making it significantly softer permanently.
