I personally use a program called tsunami mpeg dvd easy back.

Its more then just converting to dvd to make a burnable file.

You need to first convert the avi or mpg file into an mpeg file which takes a couple hours for average movies, then you need to convert to a dvd file pack which is a folder that contains like 8 or more files depending on movie length, if you add a menu, etc etc. Then you can go to write a dvd and you put all the files in the folder into the dvd file thing and burn it.

anyhow, if your new computer is running windows 7 (I don't know if win 8 has it)

you can use some included software to author DVD's
this software works with .avi
