I don't know much about these but I want to make one with a brakeline barrel for .177 bbs. Would I have to take off the paint coating or leave it as is? Or would it even work at all?

well if your going to make a coilgun you definately dont want a metal barrel (messes with the magnetic field). my first coil gun shot bbs i used a straw as a barrel but that gun was way ghetto. my current coilgun (multi-stage) doesnt evan have a barrel there is just a .5mm air gap between the projectile (sections of this steel rod) and the coil. if you want your gun to have any power make it multi-stage or shoot sharpened steel rods (about 8mm diameter 1-2 inches long is what i use)

I just want to make a simple single stage one using a disposable camera.
Do you know of any plastic tube that's good for .177 bbs?
How do you make the bigger ones with several stages go off in series?

theres a picture of my first one it shot .177 bbs i used a straw for a barrel. that gun was just a coil taped on the top of an old camera flash with a push button switch trigger.
the multi stage gun im working on now uses optical sensors, there is an ir led and ir phototransitor befor each coil. when the projectile brakes the ir beam the phototransitor activates a scr dumping a 300v 1000uf capacitor into the coil. some people use microcontrolers but that is way more complicated.

Please help me out here. the web has crap for info.
What makes a coilgun more effective, thicker wire or thinner wire?
Should the coil be long with few levels or short with many levels?

go to magnet gun club, i dont have a link to it but try typing it into google
www.powerlabs.com might give you the info you need, not sure though. They specialize in railguns, coil guns, and other EM weapons.
I just had an idea on how to shoot non-ferrous objects, make a standard coil gun, make a metal "wad" that stays in the barrel, the coil will pull the "wad" and the "wad" will push the non-metal object out, add a spring to pull the wad back after each shot and you could have a fully auto coil gun.

thats a pretty good idea
I decided 22 gauge wire for my gun. One D cell is the power source. I got a styrene tube which is a perfect for bbs. I'm using the board out of a fujifilm camera and two kodak capacitors (they're a lot bigger)

i'm curious about these kinda accelerators...i had made a mini railgun that made about 100 fps with a BB and a loud report, with some hot blue plasma mussle flash...i could fire it about ten times beforce if broke..., but what's the velocity of a projectile out of a coilgun? i have three 330V 80 microFarrad capacitors and a lot of 1mm wide copper wire.....what kinda powzer could a one long stage coilgun have? Not fast with a small one.
Mine is coming along smoothly. I did some tests and it works pretty good. Gets a bb across a room easily. Not powerful enough to hurt something though.
I have a little roadblock though because I burnt the board with the soldering iron.

Atlantis your idea has already been done, check it out here . the only diference is this guy is still using matal projectiles, the idea you suggested reminds me of a solidnoid.
dont expect any serious damage with camera capacitor they only got a few joules of energy, get some serious capacitors like mine 60 joules each and i got them $5 a piece.

I didn't expect anything crazy. I just wanted to see if I could really make one. It's a fun little project.

Here it is:

I think it came out great. Not bad for my first coilgun.
Specs:
Single stage, 2" long coil, 22 gauge enameled magnet wire
Circuit board- from Fujifilm continuous flash camera
Power source- D battery
Capacitors: 4 photoflash caps, 2 Kodak & 2 Fujifilm
Fire switch- momentary pushbutton
Charge switch- toggle
LED charging light
Styrene barrel
6x3x2 project box
Ammo: .177 bbs and nails
