I coulda sworn I posted this once but I don't remember.

I was reading on another forum about the possibility of "air strikes" in an airsoft game and I remembered that I build this thing years ago.

Anyway, this is my "bomb" dropper. The idea is pretty simple. You have two rubber bands anchored at either end and stretched over a servo arm. The rubber bands keep tension on a few Nerf darts. When you flip the switch, the servo arms turn and release the bands and the bombs drop.

Noice! I should probsbly get around to making something like that. You should put pressureized chambers with pellets in them, then have them rain down at high speeds

Hey, thats cool, ill have to try that with my planes/ helicopter. I was trying to think of how i would get something like that to work and you showed me, thanks. Ill probly drop paint balls or something.

Ive got to admit, thats quite creative. The only thing Im concerned with is the practicality of air-strikes in an airsoft game. I mean it's cool and all, but it's not going to be very effective unless you have something like a nose mounted camera for dive bombing.

Nice, hey, sorry for changing subjects but, how much weight can your average middle class R/C plane carry beyond the necessities? By middle class I mean planes like the Merlin and other planes of similar size and price, by “beyond the necessities” I mean beyond the motor, battery, and basic/stock circuits.
And how big a plane would it take to carry at least a three once bomb and bomb release mechanism and two small cameras and transmitter?

I have a 6 1/2 ounce, 24" delta wing which can barely carry it.

An average park flyer could probably handle a couple ounces.

Get a gws slow stick, It will hold about 2 pounds if you have the right set up. They are slow and are extreamly duable. The best part is that thay are like $30 ARF.

ARF??? THat looks cool PVC. In a PB game replace the darts with water ballons with paint.

Build the fuselage out of Soda bottles to give suitable compressed air tanks, have a barrel poking out the side with a small ball valve connected to a servo, chuck a bunch of BBs in with the air et voila, gunship!

My old .46 trainer would lift off with about a pound and a half with a full tank of fuel, but slowly. I didn't trust it with over a pound, especially if I had to dead-stick.

I had rigged up a little "bomb bay" that was opened by a servo pulling a small pin that held the trap door shut. I dropped eggs and film canisters full of pennies. Too bad I got rid of my model plane years ago.

I wouldn't use a gas-powered model airplane for a paintball UAV - too much potential for that to go wrong. If the pilot messed up, or got distracted, or if something malfunctioned with the radio or the plane, or he had to dead-stick land it in a bad position, someone could get seriously injured. Those props can take off flesh pretty easily.

Edit: Oh, I just realized you were talking about an electric plane. That's different. I have no idea how much they can lift, and I assume they'd probably be safe for paintball UAV use, granted a reasonably skilled and responsible pilot.

Jackssmirkingrevenge, if I were to make a gunship it would be a dive bomber, gunships with the guns broad side need to be full sized so you can put full blown cannon in them.

Pete Zaria, what does “dead stick” mean? Is gliding, or when power assisted controls go out or something like that?

My plan was to take a cheap, large, slow flying plane equip it with two cameras one straight down, not for a bomb sight but recon, and one facing forward for flying by. And a bomb bay that could hold AT LEAST one 3oz bomb, preferably three or more. I’d use it for anti-tank/recon dive bombing the tanks and getting a bird’s eye view of the field. Thought something like this would be nice for D-DAY, if I ever get to go.

What kind of remote would you get for a slow stick? I definitely want a 3 channel but I don't know anything more than that.

I have a Hobbyzone Xtreme and it's sick. Last time I flew it, I forgot to put the rubberband on that holds the elevators in place and it didn't end up very well. It went straight up, stalled out and crashed nose first. The plastic that held the engine in place collapsed so now I have to pull it back out for the umpteenth time.

I know my plane can hold some stuff but I'm not sure how much. You can actually buy an attachment (way less cool) that drops parachuters or streamers.

ARF= almost ready to fly. Ya it will hold about 1.5-2 pounds if you have duel brushless motors and a 1500 mHa li-poly battery and a big prop. The fusalage is a piece of square alluminum tubing and weighs about 1.5 pound rtf (ready to fly) My slow stick lasted for years and can fly for about 45 minutes with a li-poly pack. You need 2 servos and a speed controler, which makes it 3 channel.

you can buy one here at www.towerhobbies.com (dont buy one unless you really know what you are doing) It is EXTREAMLY slow and EXTREAMLY stable, but you need to by alot of upgrades if you want to carry a pay load. All ready to go and basicly on steroids for planes, it will cost about $200 It is a great plane, infact is is so slow that i can catch it with my hand (with the prop off of cource)

edit- dead stick is when you have no control over the plane because it is (1) out of range of the controler, which is about 1 mile, or (2) if the battery died and cant power the servos. Any other plane questions?

So I was close about “dead stick” but close only counts in horse shoes, hand grenades, and government work…

But, yeah, I do have a few plane related questions, but rather than continue to “barrow” PVC arsenal’s thread, I’ll start my own, asking the questions I would like answered, I’ll post a link to that in a minute.
