I work on engines all the time and i have made some preety gheato stuff, if you want more horse power take off the air filter and muffler, also if u cand find one put a battery powered blow dyer on the in take it will make alot more power. and if u have the skill rebuild the carb and clean all the electrical compononts and buy and gap a new spark pluq. good luck hope it works. awesome idea!
o. yeah and if ur thinking of steering use two brakes on each side that can be easily actuated with a lever

taking off the air filter increases the flow though the motor and there for increases power the blow dryer increases flow even more and really helps the hp

taking the air filter off will ruin the engine if you get dirt in it. yo could get a high performance filter on top of the blow dryer. when i have a lawn mower layin around i polish the head i don't know if that does anything but it looks cool. is it a horizontal or vertical shaft? how much hp?
The way to reduce the dirt blown in the engine is either put a filter between the carb and the blower or inbetween the blower and the blower intake (just like you said) it doesnt need to be a high performance filter though just a simple airfilter pad. Even if you do this you will still get dirt in the engine though and yes it wont last as long. But if you do it right your engines life wont be greatly sacrified.

i just said high performance because it would look cool. i want to do that do my mower. i had a dual exaust on one of mine it was cool but the metal that held it to the engine broke off but it was cool while it lasted. my dad won't let me put it oon his new mower
