So I have just got a nice new robust "piston valve" with a blowgun pilot, And I thought I should come to this website for inspiration on making a cannon with this, so far I was thinking along the lines of Mid-sized sniper rifle style thing, but The piston is 1" porting...which is quite big. Any idea's guys? thanks.

1" porting "quite big" ? not really. These days it's mid-sized just as you said. Look through the album at all the cannon pictures and work up a build plan from other's ideas/builds. Then post your idea/s and we will be glad to discuss it, help you with any fine points or questions you might have.

A tip for you, look at the area you have to shoot in and think what size cannon could you use?

Welcome to Spudfiles.

search the pneumatic showcase section, making sure to check "search for all terms" there you will find plenty of piston valve configurations. There is also an abundance of sprinkler valve cannons that could easily be reproduced with a 1 inch piston.

If it were me I'd go something like this http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7288&

EDIT: Beaten to it :/

If you want to go large, it would make an excellent pilot

Thank-you for the warm welcome. I mean I have made pneumatic cannons in the past, to a nice result and learning curve lol. made a sprinkler valve with 3/4" porting, but it can still throw a projectile a quarter of a mile. I have only really built electro-magnetic gun style things and solid rocket fuel lol so not half bad. Yeah I mean I live in London lol so there is not much room for long distance shots. I will give it a little thought and get back to all of you.

What would be the best chamber?

Do you mean chamber size, chamber pressure, chamber material.... ?

I sense another member who lives on your side of the vast saline solution contact holder known as the Atlantic is about to show up and disprove that.

In the meantime, do you have some pictures of the piston valve, or a detailed diagram, so we can get an idea of how it will perform?

A quarter of a mile, with the right mass projectile, of the right shape and cross-sectional area would not have difficulty travelling a quarter of a mile. I am open to constructive criticism, but don't be gormless.

I actually do not have a huge amount of time for building cannons because I am half way through my A levels lol. But I enjoy putting in a bit of time.
