Think outside the box,do you actually need a glue gun to use the glue sticks?Hell no,get yourself a baked bean can (empty) chop up some glue stick and hold it over a candle,use pliers it will get hot

End caps sometimes fit flush inside a coupler so you could try that.

He tapped a hole and threaded in a bolt which had the head cut off.

I made a hole just a little smaller than the bolt and force screwed in the bolt and cut off the head. Then I chucked the bolt into the drill press. The hole in the piston goes just past 1/2 way through. The bolt tapped its way in.
