firstly for your ball valve pull it apart and lube up every seal and part in it with some high quality grease. then it should turn like 10000 times easier and the valve needs to be able to turn easily for it to be spring loaded.

and for the sprinkler valve i highly recommend pneumatic moding it with a blow gun its quite easy. you might think oh no i don't want to mod it and end up procrastinating but don't it took me too long to mod my first valve and now im regretting it. and also i don't believe 1 9 volt batter would be enough to pilot the valve. (correct me if im wrong).

One nine volt will work fine, but I would advise you to mod it, in the end I think you will have better luck with modding a sprinkler valve than spring loading a ball valve. However if you do decide in the ball valve, when you get your grease make sure it is ok to use on whatever seal the ball valve uses. Some lubes will eat away at the o rings.

when dealing with pvc/abs lube/grease, , best is to use white lithium grease. its 3$ for a caulk tube full of it (you dont have to use the caulk thing to dispense it, its just shaped like those tubes.)
