ball valve vs. sprinkler valve

Which would be more effective and have more air flow: a 1.5" ball valve or 1" modded sprinkler valve?

The ball valve may have a higher air flow, but the sprinkler valve will be more effective. The sprinkler valve opens nearly instantaneously and so there will be a much more efficient use of air.

I concur. The 1.5" ball valve is a fairly hefty beast thus making it even slower to actuate manually.

ball valve may have better air flow and is probably cheaper , but releases way to slow and especially if you're going to use a 1.5" one. the sprinkler valve may be a little more costly and may not have as great air flow, but it opens extremely quick.

Sprinkler valves aren't that expensive anyway. Heck, look at the piston designs on here as well, they're extremely fast if made correctly, very cheap, and much smaller.

Depends what you mean by "effective" really. If you have a very long barrel 1.5m+ then yeah a BV might not be so bad, but otherwise definately go for a sprinkler valve.

well in an oversized system with a giant chammber, and super greased valve, a BV is much better however i you like guns you can hold while firing a sprinkler valve is better

A piston is much better, but beariung in mind the OP has just one post, they may not have the budget or skill necessary

Budget? Pistons can be the cheapest kind.

If you can't make one, then you have to buy one, I believe a 1" stinger valve is about $45, whereas a sprinkler is about $10, I guess if he had the option he would have asked about that too.
@pmalone: do you feel confident enough to build a piston valve?

Maybe he didn't know it was an option. I think he should take a look at pistons, they'll take some practice to get a process down right, but I think it'd be more satisfying.

The problem is that your projectile will be long gone by the time the BV opens to max porting. Sprinkler valves all the way.

Sprinkler valve wins, always.

After using a ball valve gun for about a month, I just ditched it. It was hard to turn (bruised my hand), slow, ineffeicient, expensive (a good sized ball valve is easily almost as expensive as a sprinkler valve), and very difficult and awkward to use.

Ideally, I would just use a QEV or piston, though.
