I got a 1 1/2 inch sprinkler valve today and i was wondering which of the following should I pilot it with.. (I'm not going to do the actual poll option for the reason I want to hear peoples have to say about the options)
(A) Blow gun
(B) 3/4 Inch sprinkler valve
(C) 1/4 Inch ball valve.
Let me know what you think. Thanks

I ended up using a 3/4" sprinkler valve for best performance.
A blowgun worked but had marginal performance.

Seeing as the fittings used to connect the two sprinkler valves are the limiting factor, a 3/4'' QEV would actually be the most efficient choice all the way around. It's not as expensive and will pilot this particular valve as effectively as the sprinkler valve dewey used.

It depends on whether or not it is chamber filled or pilot filled.
If it chamber filled then you will need a spring in the QEV.
That is why I used a sprinkler valve.

is a 1 1/2 sprinkler valve powerful enough to launch soda cans.

Yes but how far they will go is the question???? You will have to play aroind with ggdt to see the results you will get.

I bet with a 10 foot barrel and at least 500 cubic inches you should be able to break cinder blocks with filled soda cans

Go with a 2 inch sprinkler valve, they are more powerful than the 1.5 inch QEV's (dust collectors). The only way to take advantage of the power of the 2 inch sprinkler valve is to pilot them with a 1/4 inch QEV from McMaster.

A 2" sprinkler valve, 2"x3' chamber and 2.5"x3' barrel gives me about 260fps with soda cans at ~120PSI if I recall correctly. Not bad considering they weigh quite a lot and both barrel and chamber are fairly small but a 1.5" valve will definitely lower performance significantly.
edit: 260fps not 200fps.

On that note anyone have a 2inch sprinkler there willing to sell.

Evan did you mean a 3/4 qev? A 1/4 seems rather small for a 2 inch valve??

I don't know the distance but i shot out soda can's soup cans all the above with my 1 1/2 inch sprinkler valve. Destroyed a lot of objects with ease. It was video #18 i uploaded, check it out on my page if you missed that one. I destroy like 10 things in that video. It worked very well, also i was using the 3" barrel to shoot the cans because we didn't want to switch out the barrels at the time, so we just put some paper towels down in the barrel first. so i'm sure a 2.5 will shoot them nicely.

I actually never seen that video before and that was the best.one yet. I am.surprised.at the damage you were getting with the 3 inch barrel. @ 8 ton I would try the dust collector at shooting cans. If he was getting that good of performance from a sprinkler valve imagine how much better the dc would be!!
