Design advice, would this work?

Hey guys, so this is an outline of what I want to build

Chamber will be 1 1/4'' x 6'', barrel will be 1/2'' x 24'' sleeved inside of a 1 1/4'' pipe, 8'' of the 24'' will have holes drilled into it to act as a suppressor. The 1 1/4'' sleeve will be filled with steel wool, would this work well? Any advice to change the design for better efficiency would be greatly appreciated.

If it is combustion don't use steel wool.

Fiberglass mat would work well. Try and find something denser then the blown wall insulation.

For a combustion, one of the things you want to do is absorb heat, so fibreglass matt would not really contribute.

Get your hands on this stuff, and a tub of lithium grease.

can someone explain whats wrong with steel wool? I see that recommended in other threads here. Also, what is the point of those rings that kind of split up the inside of the siencer into different sections? Baffles I think they're called? Are they necessary?

Is this for a combustion, hybrid or pneumatic?
If it's for pneumatic forget the steel wool and use baffles.
If it's for combustion or hybrid, steel wool is fine but copper wool conducts the heat better so it performs better at cooling the gas.

Having a few baffles is still a good idea though, they help slow down the gas a lot, giving more time for the heat to dissipate to the copper wool and surrounding structure.

Fine steel wool is also prone to at best disintegrating after being subjected to combustion gasses, at worst bursting into flames.

are the baffles just empty space or are they filled with insulation as well?

They are just empty spaces. Seriously, watch that video Jack posted, it will show everything you need to know.

hmm just watched the video, still don't understand why there are multiple baffles, why not just have one long baffle?

The baffles are the separators, not the spaces in between.

Have a look at this impressive high speed footage of what is going on inside a modern suppressor:

Each baffle creates turbulence, which gives the gasses more time to cool as well as making the passage more difficult for the gas which follows. A suppressor with no baffles is generally much less effective.

When making a silencer, would the length of the silencer count as part of the barrel? Would a 16'' barrel with a 8'' silencer count as a 24'' barrel? I'm planning on having a 1:1 C:B ratio, would it be a horrible idea to port the whole length of the barrel and sleeve it with insulation?
