People do make hybrids out of metal, its more exspensive though. PVC is just a easier.

Sch80 PVC is lighter, very strong, and cheaper than steel pipe. Last time I checked most people dont have a full set of pipe threading dies, so Sch80 is a very good option. Sch80 hasnt let me down yet...
