Hey folk, just droppin in to say I'm still here, and I haven't quit spudguns lol. Spudding runs in ups and downs, you love it, its boring, you love it, it gets boring... I'm starting back in the upstage lol, and Hybrids are just plain my favorite of them all...

So, my cousin and I are starting that handheld hybrid up again, the "Son of Mauler" (should be SOB, the Mauler kicked like a bitch :P ). I've got the meter finished, air inlet, and just have to finish getting the chamber pressure gauge hosed up and the ignition installed, then it should shoot.

I got one question in the design though, should I throw the old Mauler stock back on? I've got an idea for a second handle that comes out the left at about level with the union for a good solid grip, so in conjuntion with the pistol grip and stock, it should be pretty controllable. Sound like a sound idea?

If you can make it fit comfortably, I'd put the old stock back on.

I'd tend to worry about pvc in a hand-held though. I think it was noname(?) who had a sch80 hybrid blow up at 2x, even though it had taken higher mixes in the past. I'm not sure how lethal pvc shrapnel actually is, but it can cut you up badly.

I think a couple steel fittings wouldn't be too expensive for peace of mind (wouldn't worry too much about the union and barrel).

but anyway, it looks good so far. Try to cover up the tape though.

In my opinion, PVC hybrids are a recipe for disaster, even if they are fully sleeved SCH 80. Building the same thing out of steel fittings would be cheaper, and far safer.

But if the thrill of not knowing whether you'll end up with a shard of PVC through your jugular after you pull the trigger is what makes it fun for you, then go right ahead :D

Good lord, he's still alive!

I say put the stock back on, it's THE feature that made the mauler so unique. Of course, the whole bomb right next to your face idea is fairly unattractive. You could to like Mr.Plow did with some of his cannons, and put a strap on it.

I've been somewhat concerned by the PVC chamber (though I do have some trust in it, Sch80 is some strong stuff and its been my select hybrid material). I've been considering cutting a sleeve of PVC and gluing+hose clamping it over, with holes drilled to accomodate parts, and I mean HOSE clamping it, like a clamp spaced every inch. Or, I could wait a while and machine an aluminum chamber...

And seriously guys, spare me the lectures lol, I've been at this long enough to know the details. 1600 posts in spudtech, and I was a mod...

I haven't even built a hybrid yet (the 500 psi pneumatics are entertaining though), but I just wonder why one would use SCH 80 PVC when steel is almost cheaper per size, with much more favourable characteristics. I know that you of all people know what you're getting into, I just kind of wonder why.

Self contained hybrids are great though, and this looks like it's going to be loads of fun. Good luck, and don't get blown up in the process :bom:

I thought the same thing!

I'd say put the old stock back on.

Sounds like the stock is in then, I'll get to that. The reason I prefer PVC is its a lot cleaner looking than steel pipe, steel pipe surface finish is piss, and the fittings look like crap. If I was back in tech school I'd have simply machined an aluminum chamber, but I'm not, so I cant...

And I already had the parts on hand, which is the nice thing about it. I've already felt the pain of the money leaving my wallet, now I just get to build the gun with spare parts (which I have a great selection of now heh, advantage to being a spudder for the last 5 years lol).

Go for Gold, and chuck it on the stock for sure I think you should invest in the clamps every 20mm or so,but try not to make it ugly as sin.

Will there be videos, damage pictures when you are done?

I should really finish my Hybrid. . .
